Job Description
As a per diem Surgical Technologist, you play a crucial role in the operating room by assisting surgeons and other medical professionals during surgical procedures. Your primary responsibilities include preparing the operating room, sterilizing equipment, and ensuring a safe and aseptic environment. Your attention to detail, knowledge of surgical procedures, and ability to work efficiently contribute to the success of surgical interventions.
*** This is a per diem position that will end up being part time as the surgery center gets built up ***
Job Responsibilities:
Preoperative Preparation:
- Set up and organize the operating room with surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
- Check and ensure that all necessary equipment is functioning properly.
- Verify the cleanliness and sterility of the surgical instruments and supplies.
Assisting Surgical Team:
- Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other team members during procedures.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide necessary support.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery.
Patient Care:
- Assist in the positioning and draping of patients before surgery.
- Prepare and transport patients to and from the operating room.
- Monitor and document vital signs during surgery.
Postoperative Duties:
- Assist with the removal of soiled drapes and used instruments.
- Dispose of medical waste according to established protocols.
- Clean and restock the operating room for subsequent procedures.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Communicate effectively with the surgical team, including surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care.
Adherence to Protocols and Safety Standards:
- Follow established protocols and procedures to maintain a safe and sterile environment.
- Adhere to infection control policies and standards.
Continuing Education:
- Stay informed about new surgical techniques, equipment, and procedures.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance skills and knowledge.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) is often required.
- Knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection control.
- Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
Working Conditions:
- Work primarily takes place in the operating room.
- May involve standing for extended periods and occasional lifting of heavy equipment.
- Exposure to various surgical procedures and potential biohazards.
