Job Description

Job Description
Description:

The Masonic Medical Research Institute is looking for enthusiastic candidates to join the laboratory of Dr. Nathan Tucker (www.genetics.mmri.edu/). Successful candidates will join a research program which focuses on understanding the effects of human genetic variation (such as that identified by GWAS) on cardiovascular phenotypes. We have roles for experimentalists, computationally-inclined individuals, or those with blended experience, and encourage all with interest in our research program to apply.

Examples of focus areas include defining epigenomic changes in normal and disease conditions, single-cell RNA sequencing for discovery and definition of novel cell states in human disease, large-scale CRISPR-mediated screening of coding and non-coding variant function, assessment of disease-causing variation in model organisms, and intersection of all previously mentioned data with human population genetics and health outcome data.

In addition to internally driven projects, our group also has extensive national and international collaborations, including with groups at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, Columbia University, Massachusetts General Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt University, and others. Opportunities to intern at these collaborative sites may be available on a project-to-project basis.

  • Support for publication of high and medium impact journal articles. We are also strong advocates of preprints.
  • A supportive environment that keeps your short and long-term career goals in mind. Your success is our success!
  • Clear expectations provided in structured project management
  • A closely-knit, exceptionally equipped research institute with a wide variety of research interests and expertise.
  • An appreciation for work/life balance; sometimes the best ideas come when not in the lab!
  • A highly competitive compensation and benefits packages. Unlike most institutions, MMRI offers matching retirement contributions for postdocs!
  • A position in the very affordable Mohawk Valley of Upstate New York: an ideal region for those interested in myriad outdoor adventures including those in the Adirondack State Park, the largest park in the contiguous United States.

Requirements:
  • A recent or pending PhD in the biological sciences or related fields.
  • A research background in cell and molecular biology and experience with standard workflows within these fields. Experience in microscopy and next generation sequencing, including analyses of these data, are highly desirable.
  • Experience with model organism and/or cell culture work. Experience with iPSCs is highly beneficial.
  • Demonstrated productivity in the form of first author publications and presentations
  • Excitement to tackle difficult scientific questions in areas that will involve significant development of technical and analytical workflows
  • Scientific creativity to identify novel approaches to answer our research questions
  • A hard working and collegial attitude
  • A desire to work in an informal, highly collaborative, and scientifically rigorous laboratory environment.
  • Graduating in August/December 2023? Still a good time to apply!
