GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Dental assistants prepare patients for oral examination and assist dentists in providing treatment to the teeth, mouth and gums. Dental assistants also sterilize instruments, set up instrument trays, prepare the materials used in dental procedures and carry out chair-side functions such as keeping the patients mouth free of debris, handing the dentist the appropriate instruments and taking and pouring up impressions. They may also apply fluoride, apply sealants, complete prophylaxis and take x-rays. Dental assistants will be asked to maintain patient records in information management systems.

With additional training, assistants may monitor patients who are being administered nitrous oxide.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

o High school graduate or GED equivalent
o Current knowledge and experience in the dental assisting field and/or the ability to learn
o Ability to demonstrate or learn coordination by adjusting actions in relation to others' actions
o Ability to demonstrate or learn computer skills: dental office system
o Ability to demonstrate or learn well-developed written and oral communication skills
o Ability to demonstrate or learn the understanding of customer service principles
o Ability to accurately record and transmit detailed information
o Ability to interpret and comply with applicable regulations
o Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
o A means of transportation that would facilitate travel between clinics and to out of town meetings and
training when it is deemed necessary and appropriate. Travel may be required with or without advance notice.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary:
o Dental Assisting functions including:
o Provide chair-side assistance to dentists in the performance of all dental procedures and emergencies
o Prepares, sterilizes, and organize instruments and equipment
o Set up instrument trays and prepare materials
o Complete prophylaxis
o Take and record medical and dental histories and treatment information in patient record; complete treatment
notes
o Take and record patient blood pressure, height and weight.
o Expose dental diagnostic x-rays
o Apply protective coating of fluoride to teeth
o Apply sealants
o Provide postoperative instructions prescribed by dentist
o Take and pour up alginate impressions
o Order and maintain inventories of dental clinic supplies in conjunction with supply coordinator
o Maintain dental laboratory slips
o Follow and maintain all federal, state, and organizational regulations, guidelines, policies, and standards for
the provision of dental clinical services
