MATSYS, Inc. is seeking a skilled EHS Specialist to support R&D and production activities at its three locations in Sterling, VA. The EHS Specialist will report to the Director of Business Operations and will be primarily responsible for 1) maintaining compliance with environmental health and safety regulations and 2) advising leadership on and implementing process and policy changes to support a prevention and risk management-oriented safety culture.

 

The ideal candidate will excel at both theoretical and hands-on approaches to safety management. Experience in applying safety standards in R&D, production, and government contracting environments is a plus. The position is full-time and compensation is commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be hired at an EHS Specialist III or IV level.

Description

  • Supports positive culture change towards an injury-free facility through leadership, increasing employee engagement, effective training and coaching, internal safety awareness campaigns, on-the floor interactions, and policy development
  • Benchmarks with other organizations to utilize best practices and principles in the areas of safety and risk management
  • Identifies safety, health, and environmental risks through inspections and other methods
  • Acts as the subject matter expert and advisor on federal and state regulations concerning compliance programs in all areas of environmental, health, and safety
  • Collaborates with leadership and operational departments to rectify deficiencies and mitigate risk
  • Supports operations by: offering practical solutions for working safely; developing, implementing, and maintaining inspection policies and procedures; and supporting compliance with all applicable safety/health regulations, company requirements, and audit processes
  • Liaises with government and regulatory agencies in all matters related to EHS and facility security, including meeting reporting and recordkeeping requirements
  • Prepares and facilitates (or contracts with outside parties to provide) EHS education and training for employees
  • Implements, maintains, and improves EHS programs, such as: Personal Protective Equipment, Waste Management, Occupational Health Testing, OSHA recordkeeping, etc.
  • Works with Facilities and others to procure safety-related repairs to our equipment and facility and to ensure contractor compliance with MATSYS safety requirements
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of EHS budgets
  • Leads near-miss and accident investigations (in conjunction with other members of the Near Miss and Accident Investigation Committee) and supports injury case management

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety or Science, Occupational/Industrial Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related field (or equivalent combination of experience and education, including certifications)
  • 7+ years of experience in a progressively more responsible and related role
  • Certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent, OSHA 30-Hour, or equivalent
  • Experience conducting safety work in an R&D or production environment
  • Experience with policy development and process improvement/implementation
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office applications and general computer literacy
  • Ability to properly inspect and make updates to our facilities and equipment, which may require climbing ladders/stairs and significant walking

 

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Safety or Science, Occupational/Industrial Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related field
  • 10 years of experience in a progressively more responsible and related role
  • EHS&S-related certificates, certifications & training: Certified Safety & Health Manager (CSHM); Master Safety Professional (MSP); Certified Safety Director (CSD); Completion of OSHA Courses: 501, 2015, 2045, 2225 & 2455; (or equivalent)
  • Experience conducting safety work in a powder-based (metallurgy-preferred) environment
  • Experience in the government contracting environment, including related compliance regulations
