The Investment Company Institute (ICI) is the leading association representing regulated investment funds, including mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), closed-end funds, and unit investment trusts (UITs) in the United States, and UCITS and similar funds offered to investors in Europe, Asia, and other jurisdictions. ICI also represents its members on issues involving the capital markets, separately managed accounts (SMAs) and collective investment trusts (CITs). ICI’s mission is to strengthen the foundation of the asset management industry for the ultimate benefit of the long-term individual investor.

The purpose of the Senior Director, Industry & Financial Analysis is to direct and oversee the Institute’s Industry and Financial Analysis (IFA) economic program; ensure research program supports and is consistent with the Institute’s regulatory, legislative, and communications activities; and work with the Chief Economist and Deputy Chief Economist to assist in the formulation and development of policy positions and strategies. Maintains presence in regulatory, policy, research, and media communities.

Essential functions of this role include:

  • Identifies developing industry and financial market issues and formulates research to address those issues; assigns tasks and assignments as appropriate.
  • Manages and directs a team of seven individuals including senior economists, economists, and research associates.
  • Contributes to ICI research publications, comment letters to regulators, academic research, and blogs.
  • Monitors ongoing industry and financial market developments and prepares documents for senior staff that describe and analyze those developments.
  • Develops and maintains contacts among individuals within the asset management business, the financial community, regulators, academics, and media.
  • Responds to requests for information and research from Institute staff and Institute member firms.
  • Reviews regular data reports before their release.
  • Reviews and prepares critiques of economic research relevant to mutual funds, ETFs, and other pooled investment products.
  • Develops and delivers presentations to Institute staff, committees, and ICI member firms, as well as at public conferences and meetings.
  • Attends and participates in conferences dealing with topics of relevance to the Institute.
  • Participates in Research Department projects.
  • Helps develop and maintain, and work with, large databases relating to mutual funds, ETFs, and the financial sector.

If you have the following credentials, we encourage you to apply:

  • Ph.D. in economics with concentration in macroeconomics or finance; and minimum of 8 years of substantial professional experience and knowledge in analyzing economic, financial, and/or policy issues relevant to the fund industry.
  • Substantial knowledge of financial institutions and financial markets. Knowledge of international economics and international finance a plus.
  • Prior management experience preferred.
  • Detailed understanding of financial markets and institutions.
  • Substantial knowledge of financial economics, econometrics, forecasting techniques, and economic modeling.
  • Experience in analyzing issues in financial economics.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Superior analytical skills that can be translated into policy research and ability to communicate complex issues to a wide range of audiences in both written and oral form.
  • Knowledge of collecting, disseminating, and analyzing economic data.
  • Experience managing people and projects is a must.
  • Ability to work with outside contractors and academic economists.
  • An established record of empirical research is a plus.
