Job Description

JM Steel is seeking to fill the position of a Safety Supervisor at its Sinton, Texas location. This is a professional position where the employee directs and monitors safety functions for industrial processes, materials, and products to ensure continuous steel processing production. The employee will ensure production is consistent with established standards, customer specifications, and production goals for a single-site steel processing plant to supply steel products to manufacturers of strata control systems for the mining and tunneling industries, various steel fabricators, and various specialty steel products per customer specification.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • College/University Degree Preferred; High School Diploma/GED Required;
  • Two (2) Years Related Safety Supervision Experience; or Equivalent Combination of Education and Experience
  • Minimum Two (2) Years Steel Service Center Experience Preferred
  • OSHA and Safety Auditing Experience Preferred

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess working knowledge of OSHA, safety, and inspection methods, techniques, and equipment to reason and make judgments to meet deadlines in a high-volume production environment
  • Possess proficient organizational skills with great attention to detail and safety orientation mindset
  • Possess ability to interact professionally with employees and outside vendors
  • Possess verbal/written communication skills to present information or ideas clearly to personnel at all levels of production operations and senior management
  • Possess proficient information gathering and monitoring skills to facilitate effective, unbiased decision making and problem-solving functions
  • Possess proficient mathematical ability to provide technical support
  • Possess proficient computer literacy (Word, Excel, ERP system)
  • Possess a "Team" mentality with ability to take initiative and maintain confidentiality
  • Possess close visual acuity and upper limb coordination with medium (20-30 lbs) lifting capability during normal phase duties
  • Possess ability to sit or stand as needed
  • Candidate must have an excellent attendance record

JOB RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Performs daily walk-down inspection of plant area to check for safety hazards and OSHA violations.
  • Responsible for random drug screens, safety audits, equipment maintenance and tracking, safety incident investigations, safety records control, team member competency and training confirmation.
  • Retrieves daily safety checklists from working shift from each station/machine in plant.
  • Analyses and participates in management-based safety processes on a regular basis and ensures that all available resources are being utilized effectively.
  • Develops preventative and/or corrective actions per results of management-based safety processes and follows up.
  • Generates continuous improvement projects.

OTHER RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Attends corporate training sessions to acquire innovative procedures to maintain contemporary safety procedures.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by executive or senior management.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work will be conducted in a plant office that contains office machinery and equipment with intermittent off-site work performance that may require air or motorized travel with exposure to flight or road hazards and variations in weather conditions. Occasional work performance is conducted in a steel processing plant that contains heavy production machinery and job-specific equipment and tools.
  • Safety training, written procedures, and continual improvement measures are implemented to eliminate or control any physical/environmental hazards that may be present in the work place.
  • Employee use of personal protective equipment is enforced for all phases of job performance to prevent bodily injury

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Job performance demands frequent application of the following physical requirements: sitting, walking, fine manipulation, close visual acuity, upper limb coordination.
  • Job performance demands occasional application of the following physical requirements: light/medium (5/20 lbs.) lifting, standing, carrying, reaching, overhead reaching/lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, squatting, kneeling, twisting, climbing, balancing, driving, near/far vision, total visual field, multiple limb coordination.
