An opportunity exists for a CAN/LAN Transition Support Engineer to contribute to the NRO's internet network, intranet, and other data communications systems or a segment of a network system. This role involves providing network hardware and software maintenance, overseeing network control centers, and offering support to projects related to networks. Additionally, the engineer will evaluate new network technologies and provide recommendations to project managers regarding their integration into the existing network.


JOB DUTIES:


Diagnose hardware and software problems, replacing defective components and performing data backups and disaster recovery operations.


Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments, including hardware, systems software, applications software, and configurations.


Monitor the performance of computer systems and networks, performing routine startup and shutdown procedures and maintaining control records.


Configure, test, and troubleshoot hardware, networking software, and operating system software.


Prepare technical proposals for presenting new technologies to the NRO's engineering review boards.


Perform upgrades within the existing network architecture and review user requests for impact on network performance.


Conduct long-term O&M activities, including tier 3 troubleshooting and problem resolution.


Utilize complex network analysis tools to identify and correct network problems.


Prepare troubleshooting procedures for restoring the network to optimal performance levels.


Provide fault management for the network and support performance management functions.


Respond, isolate, and resolve network troubles, monitoring alarms and alerts to identify network elements causing degradation or failure.


Maintain logs and records associated with reported problems or situations.


Execute reporting functions and data input associated with network management.


Monitor the security posture of the network, reporting suspected violations to designated authority.


Coordinate with configuration management and implementation teams.


Perform operator-level maintenance on components for network management systems.


Analyze network characteristics and recommend procurement, removals, and modifications to network components.


Optimize network topologies and site configurations, planning installations, transitions, and cutovers of network components and capabilities.


Coordinate requirements with users and suppliers, organizing and directing network installations on-site surveys.


Assess and document current site network configuration and user requirements.


Maintain operating systems, communications software, database packages, compilers, assemblers, and utility programs.


Apply software, hardware, and standards information technology skills in the analysis, specification, development, integration, and acquisition of open systems for Information Management (IM) applications.


Ensure compliance with standards for open systems architectures, reference models, and profiles of standards.


Evaluate and recommend COTS applications and methodologies for interoperable, portable, and scalable information technology solutions.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


Candidate must have a minimum of 10 years of related/relevant experience, which may be a combination of work history and education (Doctorate with 0 years, Masters with 4 years, Bachelor’s with 6 years, Associates with 8 years, or High School with 10 years).


25-30% Travel Required; must have a US passport.


Required Clearance: Active TS/SCI with CI Poly.


Desired: 8570 Certification.
