Summary: A medical assistant is primarily responsible for assisting in a smooth and efficient operation of the provider, department schedules and the provision of quality health care to the patient in the clinic environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

Greets patients and answers the telephone, handles patient requests, directs calls to appropriate personnel, documents and relays accurate messages in a timely manner.

Verifies patient and account information and make necessary corrections for the registration system.

Informs patients of any office delays and assist with updating every 30 minutes if delay continues.

Schedules follow-up appointments, specialty physician appointments, and outpatient procedure appointments for patients. Make sure that any pre-certifications are verified with the insurance company within 48 hours.

Rooms patients and alerts the provider to any unusual physical and/or emotional status indications of the patient and renders assistance as necessary.

Assists with lifting patients to and from the examining tables.

Prepares patient for examination (takes weight, height, blood pressure, pulse, temperature if indicated, etc.) per physician requirements and documents in EHR (Electronic Health Record).

Assists provider with examination and/or procedure as necessary and provides supportive care for patients including giving instructions regarding the procedure and insuring privacy and safety during the exam and/or procedure.

Must have a good understanding and practical skills for sterile technique.

Review that patient’s test results are up-to-date for each appointment in EHR and scan documents in record as needed.

Maintain equipment and/or instruction by utilizing appropriate methods of cleaning, disinfecting or sterilizing, storing, and monitoring, etc. Equipment such as refrigerator, blood glucose machine, eye wash station, AED, oxygen tanks, and clinitek machine, etc.

Labels specimens at bedside and gathers necessary paperwork.

Performs necessary clerical duties, including scanning, sorting mail, ordering supplies, etc.

Maintains a clean, orderly and well-stocked working environment.

Maintains the examination/procedure rooms in a neat and orderly fashion.

Transports soiled linen to appropriate area.

Attends and participates in hospital and departmental meetings, including staff education.

Performs any other duties necessary in the operation of the department and/or hospital.

Provides back-up receptionist responsibilities.

Inventories all medications and vaccine supplies and samples. Appropriately disposes of expired medications/vaccines.

May performs EKG’s, pulse oximetry, PFT’s, lab testing (via venipuncture and fingerstick), glucose monitoring, and ear flushing order by physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant.

Administer injections under the supervision of the physicians, except for IM hip injections, insulin injections, anesthesia, controlled substances or IV drugs. Topical, oral, non-controlled or inhaled breathing treatments may be administered under the supervision of the physician.

IM hip injections may be performed by registered/certified medical assistants.

Follows Laboratory procedures for blood draws.

Reports to Laboratory Director for all lab related concerns.

Education and/or Experience: High school graduate or equivalent with courses in English and key boarding/typing, and must have mature reasoning ability. Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, neurology and medical terminology is required. Previous nursing assistant, medical/surgical office experience and/or graduate of a certified medical assistant program with current certification or experience in a hospital or extended care facility preferred. Able to operate including but not limited to computer, FAX machine, copier and multi-line telephone.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: Basic PC skills required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Current CPR certification (or must possess within 120 days of hire)
