Job Summary:

The Survey Crew Chief I leads the work of survey crew under the direction of the Land Surveyor or the Survey Department Head.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors production and efficiency of survey crew to complete projects in a timely and professional manner.
  • Takes part, when necessary, in all duties of survey party and assesses performance of subordinate personnel and reports this to Survey Department Head
  • Compiles clear and concise notes, sketches, and records of data obtained and work performed
  • Makes judgments and calculations necessary for completion of projects in an accurate, comprehensive and timely manner
  • Establishes and maintains good relationship with clients in the field
  • Instructs members of survey party in proper field procedures and enforces safety policies and procedures
  • Takes part, when necessary, in all duties of survey party and assesses performance of subordinate personnel and reports this to the Survey Department Head
  • Supervises and participates in maintenance and operation of equipment and vehicles
  • Keeps accurate daily timesheets of projects worked on and personnel involved
  • Monitors production and efficiency of survey crew in order to complete projects in a timely and professional manner
  • Performs other duties as directed

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to use given equipment to complete any needed job in the field
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions and correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume by applying concepts of basic algebra, trigonometry, and geometry
  • Excels at managing others on‐site
  • Can lead a crew on any type of survey
  • Shows desire to train field technicians
  • Establishes and maintains good relationships with clients in the field
  • Supervises and participates in maintenance of equipment and vehicles; keeps accurate daily timesheets of projects worked on and personnel involved
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to correctly interpret, disseminate and execute instructions following adopted standards of procedures
  • Has appropriate level of knowledge of office and survey equipment
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products

Physical Requirements:

  • The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and climb or balance
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • The employee will regularly work outside in weather conditions
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate

Education and Experience:

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • At least 3-5 years of progressive experience as a survey instrument person and related experience and/or training
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record
