Construction Manager

Hazen and Sawyer is seeking a qualified and experienced Construction Manager to join our team on a full-time basis to support the construction and rehabilitation/expansion of water and wastewater facilities and infrastructure in the Central Ohio area. We work on a diverse range of projects for municipal, industrial, private, and federal clients in the water and wastewater industries, and our clients can expect the highest level of service and expertise from us. As a Construction Manager, you will be tasked with building and leading a team of individuals within Hazen who can readily assist on construction of water and wastewater facilities. Skills needed include observation, coordination, documentation, and inspection activities for various water, wastewater, and reclaimed water facilities and pipeline projects. This position reports to our Columbus, Ohio office, and travel within the area is required.

Job Description

As a Construction Manager located in the Columbus, Ohio area you will support important projects in the construction phase of water, wastewater and reclaimed water treatment facilities, and pipelines. You will work with owners, contractors, third-party firms, and Hazen engineers to support the construction and commissioning of client’s projects.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Building a team of Hazen staff able to provide construction inspection and resident project representative roles.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with multi-discipline teams, consultants, owners, contractors, and third-party inspection/testing firms
  • Attend project meetings and discuss construction progress and inspections.
  • Be able to conduct on-site observation, monitoring, inspection, and evaluation of construction activities, and be able to teach others to perform these skills.
  • Review and interpret project demolition and work plans, specifications and drawings to verify contractor compliance
  • Review and monitor project schedule, sequence of activities, and time extension claims
  • Assist the multi-discipline engineering team in the resolution of requests for information and claims
  • Review contractor performance and compliance with safety requirements
  • Review daily reports, verify material quantities, and review contractor pay applications as necessary
  • Assist and coordinate with project start-up activities
  • Maintain construction related documentation
  • Assist with construction administration tasks, including shop drawing processing and maintenance of documentation, and review of change orders

Qualifications and Skills

Required

  • 10+ years of experience as construction, construction observation, and facility start-up experience
  • CCM Certification
  • Experienced with client engagement and collaboration
  • Experience in similar roles supporting municipal treatment facilities in the construction phase of projects
  • Familiarity with construction methods typical of civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as construction materials testing
  • Working knowledge soil compaction methods and concrete handling, placing, curing and sampling techniques.
  • Ability to easily move around active construction sites safely and effectively
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in computer software typically used in offices
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working on and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to travel in the local area
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to travel as required.

Preferred

  • 15+ years of experience as RPR and similar roles on large municipal treatment facilities
  • Experience working with teams using construction management software (e.g., Procore, etc.)
  • B.S. or Associate degree in a Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, and/or Building/Construction Science preferred. Candidates with significant construction management experience will be considered as well.
