Job Title: Library Associate/Paraeducator


Reports to: Building Principal and Teacher Librarian

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The Paraeducator will:

  • Support a safe, positive teaching and learning environment
  • Assist in the development of student's physical and intellectual growth
  • Support social, emotional, and behavioral development
  • Establish positive and productive relationships
  • Integrate effectively the technology to support student learning
  • Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct on an ongoing basis

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:


  • Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Check out/check in books, reshelve returned books.
  • Inventory collection annually.
  • Continuously inventory books in a series, new additions of books, and appropriate books for the Middle School. Read the new books to offer better guidance and offer suggestions to students.
  • Account for overdue books. (Collaboration with teachers...)
  • Register new students and patrons into the online system permitting them access to check out books.
  • Process news books: labeling, protective tape/book covers.
  • Locate library materials for patrons, and suggest appropriate books according to their genre preference, age, and lexile level.
  • Collaborate with the Librarian on new materials/reading books to ensure the books are appropriate for the middle school, culturally diverse, offer good character and plot development, and follow district guidelines. Provide interesting nonfiction books for students. Provide exciting books that deliver a message (SEL) and or entertainment and entice students to read and relate.
  • Promote SSR (sustained silent reading) throughout the building: every student has a book checked, promote reading during advisory, core support, and free time.
  • Answer teacher requests for books or books in a specific subject area for classroom use. Locate classroom sets of books for teachers from other libraries in the district.
  • Instruct students on where to find books and how to use the card catalog.
  • Monitor the condition of books. Make appropriate repairs using mending tape or glue. Discard books beyond repair, update records, and order replacements.
  • Maintain records of received, stored, issued, or returned items and maintain the online card catalog.
  • Create displays in the Media Center: book displays, features, bulletin boards, and display cases. Update monthly, including historical events, current events, and holidays.
  • Maintain a safe, friendly, quiet, professional environment in the Media Center where students feel welcome to study, read, or work on group projects.

  • Maintain a Media Center Calendar for meetings, classes, and students who need to use the library space.
  • Open and Close the Media Center in the morning and after school. Example: check in all returned books for that day, shelve books (if time), shut down the computer, clear of counters, clean all tables and surfaces, turn lights off, and lock doors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Teacher Librarian

TECHNOLOGY-


  • Ensure students have a working device for the school day including the following:
    • reset passwords
    • process damaged laptops, keep track of damages, and collect fees owed
    • check out loaner laptops

  • New Students are input into the tech system:
    • enter tech tickets
    • set up student accounts.
    • Create ID tags for student laptops.
    • Troubleshoot tech issues to resolve or refer to the tech department as needed.
    • Check out power cords to students who need to take their laptop home and keep track of returned items.
    • Maintain a student laptop spreadsheet shared with IT.

Core Support, Substitute duties, Dual Enrolled Students, Homeschool students:

  • The Library is a "Homebase" for dual-enrolled students and those who are taking online courses.
  • Homeschool and Dual Enrolled student laptops are kept in the library when not in use.
  • Students are in the library if they are not attending class.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Earned high school diploma or education equivalent

Education and Licensure:

  • Para Educator Certificate or equivalent preferred

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities, etc. The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors when supervising students outside of the classroom.
