Role Overview:
The Fiber Optics Splicing Intern will participate in the daily tasks of the Transport department for commercial installations which require equipment configuration, fiber patching & testing at Astound hub sites & troubleshooting any fiber related issues. The internship may also include shadowing with a Network Fiber Resource Engineer, Network Construction Engineer and/or hands-on designing of transport networks.


Responsibilities:

The Fiber Optic Splicing Intern will be responsible for the following areas

  • Accompany & observe Transport dept technicians for commercial installs/trouble calls @ customer premises
  • Fiber pre-testing for commercial installations
  • Testing and troubleshooting fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier and scope
  • Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic that can provide high productivity
  • Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC, NESC and NEC, etc ; as well as following procedures as outlined in the Installation, Technical,
  • Operations, and Safety Manuals, and Employee Handbook)
  • Clean and maintain equipment


Qualifications

  • Current Senior at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School in good standing with (and recommended by) the Instructor of the CTE (Electronics & Fiber Optic) Program
  • Ability to adhere to Local, Federal regulations and Company policies
  • Previous exposure with construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers and scope
  • Appropriate technical & verbal skills
  • Appropriate technical & written & reporting skills
  • Must have good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and organize effectively
  • Ability to interact effectively with other team members.
  • Basic understanding of Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Work indoors in poorly ventilated areas such as attics during extreme heat
  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds
  • Work outdoors in all kinds of weather during internship scheduled hours
  • Work performed near power lines and electricity
  • Work and travel in inclement weather
