Job Summary:

As a machine shop supervisor, you will oversee the setup and operations of the equipment in the shop and develop processes to increase efficiency and ensure that finished products meet all specifications and are delivered on time. You may also be responsible for troubleshooting and repairing machinery, such as milling machines or metal lathes. This is a hands-on role that will also be responsible for the fabrication of quality parts within a set time schedule using blueprints, sketches and verbal instruction to setup, program and run parts that meet customers’ expectations. The ideal candidate should be proficient at programming machines with a Cam terminal or controller using efficient methods and be able to make necessary adjustments to ensure proper results. This individual should have good mechanical aptitude with a working knowledge of machining practices and give concentrated attention to each job, so as not to cause tool damage and / or mistakes to jobs. This will require ten plus hour days and some Saturdays.

Summary of Essential Job Duties:

  • Maintain good customer / coworker relations.
  • Supervise prism cell area and tool room.
  • Communicate effectively, so no details of a job are missed.
  • Be willing to work short notice overtime to meet customer needs.
  • Be sensitive to changing priority needs and switching jobs to meet customer needs.
  • Keep a neat work area / follow established safety practices.
  • Properly care for equipment
  • Always ensure use of safety glasses, guards, and other PPE in department
  • Reads and draws prints and sketches.
  • Accurately interprets all prints, sketches recognizing symbols and tolerances.
  • Can create prints and sketches for others in the shop to work from
  • Interpret all prints.
  • Order / ship materials, parts, and supplies.
  • Know who to contact and what to do to order materials and supplies for jobs.
  • Know how to ship parts when done for second operations and to customers.
  • Understand which forms to use and when and how to use them.
  • Estimate jobs.
  • Be able to analyze a job to determine an efficient method of producing it.
  • Have a good knowledge of and use correct tools for jobs.
  • Fill out estimating work sheets including Time, Materials, and secondary operations.
  • Train others
  • Be able to instruct others about shop operations, equipment, and procedures.

Requirements and Competencies:

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents. Ability to communicate effectively to team members and management.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts.

Educational Requirements:

  • Associate degree or Certification in precision machining preferred.
  • 5 – 10 years’ experience in precision CNC machining within a manufacturing environment.
  • Prior management experience in a production manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in machine setups for production runs, blueprint reading, quality inspection, creating preventive maintenance plans, mechanical troubleshooting, and lean manufacturing principles.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand: use hands to fingers, handle or feel: and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch: and talk and hear.
  • The job may involve prolong periods of sitting/standing.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May involve prolonged periods of magnified inspection (eye strain)
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
  • The employee is frequently required to use the computer.

Work Environment:

  • May involve the use of oils and solvents.
  • Subject to some soilage and irritation from cleaning solutions. (Lab Coats provided)
  • Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
  • Safety Glasses are required.
  • May require area specific safety training.
  • This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne paper particles.
  • May work at different workstations as production needs require, or shifts from one station to another, during the production process.
