GENERAL SUMMARY: Welding Specialist in the Welding, Processing, and Nondestructive Evaluation Branch of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) support basic and applied research and development activities with particular emphasis on fabrication of welded test assemblies. The ideal candidate will be well versed in a variety of welding and fabrication processes; capable of operating and maintaining mechanical systems; diligently adherent to concepts of good workmanship and laboratory practices; and be capable of handling administrative tasks such as written and digital record keeping and data aggregation HAZMAT management, requesting quotes, and inventory tracking. Specific qualifying skills include expertise in welding, grinding, weight handling, layout, cutting, and basic machining of steels and non-ferrous alloys.

LOCATION: NSWCCD, West Bethesda, MD.

Position Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of Post-Secondary Associates degree or Trade School/Apprentice certification

General:
  • Work independently and effectively multitask to meet schedule and task requirements
  • Perform written and digital note taking and record annotation
  • Perform in-depth troubleshooting and problem solving to handle emergent issues; seek requirement clarifications from cognizant engineers when needed; and provide feedback to support efficient execution of tasking.
  • Display good interpersonal and communication skills for interacting and building professional relationships with engineers and technicians throughout NSWCCD.

Technical:
  • Skilled in manual (i.e., gas tungsten arc and shielded metal arc welding) and semi-automatic (i.e., gas metal arc spray/pulse and flux-cored arc welding) processes.
  • Skilled in manual oxy-fuel and plasma arc cutting processes
  • Experience with mechanized and/or robotic welding gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc, and submerged arc welding processes
  • Experience with weld assembly fixturing and data monitoring equipment setup/design
  • Experience with preheating equipment (e.g., resistance or inductive) application and configuration
  • Experience operating band saws as well as material preparation by grinding, sanding, and sandblasting
  • Experience with precision layout of weld joint bevels and plate tapers
  • Experience in applying visual welder workmanship practices, identifying and resolving weld discontinuities using welding process parameter modification and/or grinding to correct
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting welding drawings, welding technique sheets, and machining drawings
  • Ability to perform basic milling and turning operations using a mill and lathe
  • Experience in designing and fabricating prototype assemblies or fixtures
  • Experience with basic facilities-related tasks such as pipe fitting, 2 and 3 phase electric connections, air and water line modification/install, soldering, concrete drilling, and anchor installation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. to various heights (e.g., onto welding carts, tables, etc.)
  • Ability to steward laboratory facilities, including managing required maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, maintaining clean and safe laboratory facilities, developing standard operating procedures, and managing inventories of laboratory consumables
  • Ability and willingness to obtain training in any of the above skills and new technologies
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)

Certifications:
  • Interior overhead crane operation, with specific experience in standing up and flipping large objects and creative approaches to designing lift plans. NAVFAC P-307 certification is ideal.
