Description (objectives of the position):

This position reports to the Food Safety & Sanitation Supervisor within the Food Safety/Regulatory Department. The Food Safety Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Food Safety and Sanitation Supervisor in carrying out all food safety activities required to conform and comply with all applicable regulations that include but are not limited to: FDA, PrimusGFS, USDA, and TDA.

Duties and Responsibilities (functions required to perform the position, the removal of which would fundamentally change the job)

  • Follows safety policies and GMP at all times.
  • Daily oversight of GMPs and Food Safety activities
  • Execute written food safety program SOPs, document and record required forms and practices.
  • Report any non-conformances immediately to the direct supervisor and assist with correction and corrective and preventive actions.
  • Write incident reports and follow up corrective actions and appropriate recording.
  • Responsible for educating employees on proper food safety practices.
  • Follows directives and implements various health, food and safety guidelines that are mandated by the state as well as the company.
  • Assists the Food Safety & Sanitation Supervisor in responding to consumer and customer complaints completely and effectively.
  • Monitors records and ensures completeness in order to assure proper trace-back information is in place for suppliers.
  • Assists in verifying appropriate sanitary conditions throughout shift.
  • Perform ATP testing periodically as required.
  • Support the Food Safety & Sanitation Supervisor training management & employees on proper Food Safety & Sanitation Procedures.
  • Oversees the treating process of the product to identify opportunities for improvement related to Food Safety & Sanitation Procedures and protocols.
  • Support the Food Safety & Sanitation Supervisor to complete all required paperwork and forms related to Food Safety & Sanitation activities in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Perform Inspections of the storage and holding areas and reporting issues to the Food Safety and Sanitation Supervisor using the proper documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Sanitation related:

  • Oversees sanitation & janitorial staff activities and inventory.
  • Identify training needs and provide, if needed, training to Sanitation & Janitorial crew.
  • Work along with Sanitation & Janitorial Lead in maintaining the inventory of disinfectants and other cleaning supplies used by Sanitation & Janitorial employees.
  • Oversees all the Policies and Procedures related to clean work environment are practiced.
  • Verify the safe application of disinfectants and other chemicals during the sanitation/cleaning process.
  • Participate in workplace audits to ensure compliance with FDA regulations, as well as to sanitation and cleaning internal procedures & practices.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and varying shifts as required.
  • Must follow all instructions related to Food Defense, Good Manufacturing Practices, and HACCP program. Must report to the Food Safety Department or direct supervisor any problem or irregular situation at their work location. Implement and enforce security and food safety standards, policies, and programs related to HACCP/HARPC, and third-party standards, regulatory standards, food safety training programs, product inspections, and any work instructions.
  • Required to follow all quality system requirements for position and facility operations.
  • Required to comply with and ensure all general safety, OSHA, USDA/APHIS, FDA and State of Texas regulations for position and facility operations.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in food technology, biology, life sciences or a technical field preferred.
  • Preventive Controls Qualified Individual certification from the FSPCA a plus.
  • Minimum high school diploma or vo-tech graduate with 1-3 years’ experience in food safety/quality assurance.
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practice
  • Knowledge of Food Safety Management Tools a plus a plus
  • Knowledge of Audits and Auditing Procedures & participating on them a plus
  • Knowledge of analytical testing procedure
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office proficiently, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new software.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus
  • Knowledge and experience in taking micro/lab (swabs) samples and utilization of external laboratories.
  • Participation in GFSI and Regulatory audits a plus
  • Food safety environmental monitoring experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems independently and with sound judgment.
  • Ability to read, write and perform necessary functions to accurately record data.
  • Ability to be detail oriented, flexible, and organized.
  • Establishes and maintains effective channels of communications between all relevant parties.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements (Describe whether exposed to chemicals, indoor or outdoor conditions, confined spaces, heights, or other specific work area characteristics)

The employee must be able to remain in a stationary position most of the time. The employee must be able to move from location to location, operate, detect, diagnose, remove, install, modify, use, and control machinery, equipment, and tools in the work environment. Constantly positions self to maintain, operate, and assess equipment, including underneath, inside, besides, and above. Must be able to frequently ascend and descend spiraling staircases and work in confined spaces. Must be able to communicate, detect, discern, and hear. The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. This job includes close vision and adjusting focus to detect, discern, operate, and inspect. The employee is regularly exposed to energized electrical gear, moving mechanical parts, tools, and vehicles. Is occasionally exposed to low permissible levels of ionizing radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Constant work temperature averages 41F.
