Under the direction of the internship or practicum supervisor on site, the Counseling or Social Work Intern will provide counseling and psychosocial rehabilitation services to clients as outlined by school requirements.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  1. Co-facilitate or facilitate psychoeducational groups and activities for adults 18+ with diagnoses of serious mental illness, substance use disorders, mild intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder.
  1. Support with milieu management, keeping clients engaged in program activities and prompting clients to group or to use coping skills as needed.
  1. Shadow the completion of intakes and annual assessments. Co-complete assessments with direct supervisor or other staff as assigned.
  1. Assist with the planning and completion of special projects as assigned by supervisor and/or Recovery Academy Program Manager.
  1. Participate in staff meetings to share and stay up to date on important clinical issues, program changes and to engage in case consultation.
  1. Provide brief, focused, individualized counseling to clients in alignment with their treatment goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be currently enrolled in one of the following clinical programs: Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work, Master of Counseling, Master of Community Mental Health Counseling, or a related discipline.
  1. Excellent listening and verbal communication skills.
  1. Strong professional collaboration skills and the ability to work with others in the behavioral health field to achieve positive client outcomes.
  1. Computer experience and proficient typing skills.
  1. Maturity and ability to seek support and feedback from supervisor and other staff as needed.
  1. Must have a reliable source of transportation to and from internship site.
  1. Must be prompt, professional and reliable.
  1. Understanding of confidentiality and privacy issues within a behavioral health program.
  1. High degree of empathy toward the clients we serve.

STATUS: Intern (unpaid)

  1. Complete assigned learning tasks and respond to feedback about work with a spirit of learning and receptiveness.
  2. Engage clients in a warm, supportive, non-judgmental and person-centered fashion at all times.

EXPECTATIONS REGARDING QUANTITY OF WORK:

  1. Fulfill the required minimum of hours of internship experience as outlined by school requirements and as agreed-upon by site supervisor.
  1. Complete internship hours within the operating hours of the Recovery Academy site (8:00 am to 4:00 pm).
