POSITION SUMMARY

Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts. Applies knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, and machining procedures.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform intricate machine setups for custom machining.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes and milling machines.
  • Measure and examine completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate all the basic machine tools to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, and materials onto machines.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Follow prepared instructions outlining methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
  • Select the appropriate tools and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine the need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Perform minor preventive maintenance. • Position and fasten work pieces.
  • Program computers such as numerically controlled machine tools.
  • Set controls to regulate machining.
  • Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information.
  • Confer with numerical control programmers to check and ensure that new programs will function properly, and that output will meet specifications.
Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and standard practices of the trade


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1 year Certificate in Machining Proficiency
  • 3-5 year(s) of applicable experience.
  • Prior experience in small scale piecework with tight tolerances, prototyping, and one-off machining
