Position Title: Cook

Department: Food & Nutritional Services

Reports To: Director of Food & Nutritional Services

Direct Reports: None

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Cook is responsible for preparing food in accordance with current federal, state and local standards. Understands and practices food safety principles throughout the flow of food through the facility. Produces quality food utilizing standardized recipes.

General Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Prepares food for all meals for patients, cafeteria and special functions; assures adherence to menus, including special diet orders; tastes food prior to service, reads and follows recipes, measures ingredients, checks production sheets to determine quantities; assures optimal quality, temperature and appearance of meals.
  • Cleans equipment in work area and cooking equipment including but not limited to meat slicer, combi oven, fryer (cafeteria and kitchen), hot water machines, ovens and stoves.
  • Cleans work area using appropriate cleaning solutions.
  • Documents tasks on the department Infection Control forms; records food and refrigerator temperatures; labels leftover food appropriately; records items that leave the kitchen between meals.
  • Follows federal and state sanitary regulations as well as facility infection control guidelines and dietary policies and procedures; observes safety precautions at all times, uses safety signs for cleaning where appropriate; uses equipment safely and appropriately; follows standard precautions.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all department data and activities.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work schedules.
  • Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

  • High School diploma or relevant experience preferred

Certification / Licensure Requirements

  • Current IL ServSafe Food Protection Certification within 1 year

Experience Requirements

  • Food Service minimum 2 years Preferred

Computer Skills

  • Basic computer skills

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner
