GSC supports the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) and we are currently seeking a Lead Dining Attendant at McMurdo Station.

As a Lead Dining Attendant you are responsible for supervising and working alongside Stewards to provide customer service and perform duties that support efforts to produce and serve high quality food.

REPORTS TO: Steward Coordinator

SALARY: $648 - $736 per week


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Displays a commitment to providing exceptional customer service, as outlined by the Food Service Supervisor and/or Steward Coordinator.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Responsible for safety reporting for all employees. This includes soreness, injuries, and near misses.
  • Responsible for all aspects of safety and sanitation in the dining and service areas, including proper instruction and monitoring of equipment usage and safety procedures, timely cleaning of all equipment and proper organization of dry storage and refrigerated areas in the service area.
  • Communicates and coordinates with other Dining Attendant, Leads for daily tasking.
  • Assigns and communicates daily tasking to Stewards. Monitors adherence to daily and weekly cleaning schedules.
  • Agrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities of the food services department. Adjusts SOP documents and/or creates new documents as needed.
  • Conducts shift meetings, formally or informally, to disseminate information and obtain feedback from stewards.
  • Oversees stocking/replenishing of all ancillary food items and non-food items, as detailed by tasking sheet, during and between meal hours; monitor quantities of items used and adjust stock levels according to usage.
  • Responsible for proper labeling and dating of food, prepared beverages and frozen dessert mixes. Responsible for appropriate storage of leftovers after meal service.
  • Responsible for preparing and chilling sufficient beverages and frozen dessert mix to support usage by the community.
  • Responsible for discarding all food waste and non-food waste in a timely manner, and in accordance with approved waste management guidelines.
  • Coordinates with Bakers for proper selection and presentation of baked items.
  • Prepares weekly food and beverage order and delivers order to Administrative Coordinator, Sr.
  • Confers regularly with Sous Chefs, Food Service Supervisor, or Culinary Manager for information regarding service and sanitation issues.
  • Coordinates with Sous Chefs to ensure timely transfer and scraping of dirty pots to pot-washing area.
  • Ensures proper initial and ongoing training of subordinate employees in all tasking areas and monitors their compliance with Standard Operating Procedures, as well as standards of health, sanitation, and safety.
  • Ensures smooth flow of service during meal periods, including anticipating unforeseen events in dynamic, atypical work environment.
  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, using staff resources if necessary. Provides such support whether metrics can be directly or indirectly, affected by this position's activities.
  • Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  • Ensures that all subordinate employees are trained and understand ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Maintains documentation as necessary to meet these requirements.
  • Work alongside stewards in daily tasking, including cleaning dishes/pots/pans; cleaning service, dining, and work areas; stocking of ancillary food and non-food items; deep cleaning of work/service areas and machines; and other tasking as required.
  • Conducts daily shift meetings to disseminate information and obtain feedback from Stewards.
  • Conducts evaluations of employees at the end of the season, or as required by Steward Coordinator.
  • Displays strong leadership, communication and organizational skills in a supervisory capacity.
  • Is self-motivated and has the ability to motivate others in physically challenging and atypical work environments.
  • Able to develop a cohesive team unit from a diverse population.
  • Able to maintain flexibility and a positive attitude in a dynamic, fast-paced work setting
  • Able to stand for up to 9 hours a day.
  • Able to lift the safety regulation maximum from the floor to a table or cart in a safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as required.

EDUCATION:

  • High school education or GED.

CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current ServSafe Food Handler certificate must be obtained prior to deployment to Antarctica.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Valid U.S. Passport

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year supervisory experience in the food service industry required.
  • Previous experience with Food Services in Antarctica may be accepted in lieu of minimum experience.

OTHER:

  • US citizenship or permanent residency required.
  • A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Tier 1 - Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment. Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete; online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards and provide additional details and information as requested by NSF Personnel Security.
