Job Description:

The Roads and Grounds Small Engine Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing all gasoline and diesel engines and equipment used by the roads and grounds crew, and for leading the roads and grounds maintenance crew as needed.

Position Type:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintain and repair small engines and hydraulic equipment.
  • Sharpen blades on all types of mowers, and perform preventative maintenance on roads and grounds equipment, such as checking oil and fluid levels.
  • Ability to safely operate and use all roads and grounds equipment when needed.
  • Maintain inventory records on repairs made, parts ordered, and parts inventory.
  • Other recordkeeping duties to manage materials and expenses.
  • Ability to exert focus, physical strength, and manual dexterity, and to remain mentally alert for prolonged periods of time, often exceeding eight hours.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, duck, stoop, squat, crawl, kneel, reach, push, pull, handle equipment, lift, and carry items up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Ability to hear with or without hearing aids and respond to verbal instructions, read printed material with or without vision aids, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to function independently and effectively as a member of a large team.
  • Ability to switch tasks and jobs regularly without losing focus or momentum.
  • Ability to function within the guidelines of the policies implemented by TPS management, including as to conduct, dress code, use of property, job competence, and integrity.
  • Ability to perform the physical and mental requirements of the job.
  • Ability to adhere to the Company’s attendance policy.

Competencies and Experience:

  • Mechanical knowledge of small gasoline and diesel engines and hydraulic equipment and their components.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Basic competency with computers, printers, mobile phones and radios.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Employee must enter into a Vehicle agreement and possess a valid operator's license for the class of Company Vehicle being driven.

Work Environment:

Work is mainly performed in a warehouse setting, and employees are regularly exposed to dust, odors/fumes, and noise. Some work may be required outdoors (e.g. loading and unloading trucks) in all weather conditions. This job is mobile and involves work in a variety of workspaces. Employees will routinely operate warehouse equipment including, but not limited to, forklifts, pallet-jacks, stake bed trucks, and box trucks. Employees may be required to work weekends, evenings or overnight/on-call as the need arises. Protective equipment must be worn when circumstances require it; employees must wear a uniform, steel toed boots, back braces, and other safety gear as needed.
