FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:

1. Assign ICD 9 CM Codes for diagnosis

2. Code the following work lists

o Radiology

o Cardiology

o Respiratory/Sleep Labs

o Physical Therapy

o Infusion Center

o Recurring Labs

o Outpatient OB/GYN NST’s

o All Un-coded Outpatient records

o Laboratory

o All Un-coded Records

3. Code Using CPT codes for Procedures in Orthopedics

o and Non-Stress Tests in OB/GYN

4. Review charts in the EBEW Lists to Determine the Reason for the Error and Correct the Error

5. Review patient charts regarding Medical Necessity forwarded from Patient Accounts and Document Correct Codes

6. Contact Physicians regarding missing Orders or Diagnoses

7. Contact the Physician’s Offices to Request Additional Information regarding a Medical Necessity Error

8. Assist in Training New Personnel in Coding

9. Assist in the Training of the Remote Coders

10. Participate in Educational Programs and In-services

11. Retain Active Status with AAPC

12. Attend Meetings as Required

13. Perform Other Duties as Assigned

14. Work with SymMetrics for Emergency Department Coding

15. Print Emergency Department Log for the previous day

16. Any other duties assigned (Ex. Patient Accounts/Billing

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Graduate. Additional Certification in the Coding field required.

EXPERIENCE: Past experience coding with ICD 9 CM Coding system, preferably in a hospital setting, is required. Knowledge of the ICD 10 coding system, medical terminology, pathology, anatomy and physiology and pharmacology is an asset.

SPECIAL:

MACHINE OPERATION: Computer, printer, FAX machine, and photocopier

PHYSICAL:

STANDING: Minimal

SITTING: Must be able to sit at desk for long periods of time while focusing on proper coding of medical diagnoses.

WALKING: Minimal

LIFTING: Must be able to lift light loads such as stacks of medical records (25 pounds).

VISUAL: Must have the ability to see and read medical records, coding books, computer screens, computer generated reports, and all other tools used in the performance of the job.

HEARING: Must have the ability to receive and understand telephone calls, i.e. doctors, insurance companies, etc.

SPEAKING: Must be able to speak clearly and verbally communicate with doctors, insurance companies, etc.
