Job Title: Farmer I

Department: Farm

Location: 110 Bonlinda Ln, Williams, OR, 97544

Seasonal Position: March-December

Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Pay: $16.50/hr


Summary: This seasonal position works on a small crew of farm laborers performing a variety of organic farming-related tasks as directed by the crew leader, including but not limited to; seeding and propagation, planting, weeding, watering, pest management and harvesting a wide variety of medicinal herbs and plants, thereby contributing to the successful growth of the organization.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Assists with optimal farm production by actively working in each area as directed, including the following: preparing soils and seed flats, applying fertilizers, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, and harvesting crops as directed.
  • Supports with identifying apparent crop disease or pest problems and brings them to the attention of the crew leader.
  • Works side-by-side with student interns, helping them learn hand weeding and cultivation techniques commonly used with medicinal herbs.
  • Assists with optimal harvest yields, by following harvesting and processing instructions; including but not limited to, picking, separating, cleaning, drying, and evaluating of crop quality of each herb according to established procedures.
  • Works with other crew members to ensure proper post-harvest handling and timely delivery of all harvested crops.
  • Works under the direction of the farm supervisor to ensure adequate irrigation of all crops.
  • Supports installation of new drip and sprinkler systems, and adjusts, as needed.
Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1 + year of related hands-on farming experience required
  • Seasonal (Spring, Summer & Fall) organic farming experience highly preferred
  • Familiarity with the cultivation of herbs preferred

Certificate and Licenses:

  • Current valid Driver’s License

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Ability to carry out detailed oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to work in a team environment without close supervision.
  • Must pay close attention to detail, ability to detect issues and troubleshoot.
  • Participates in all team meetings, sharing ideas on continuous process improvement with the supervisor and team members.
  • Ability to travel occasionally; running errands and making deliveries, as directed.
  • Experience with efficiently and safely using hand tools and small power tools, by always reading and following operating instructions, completing necessary training, and maintaining proper storage of tools as directed.
  • Ensures safe working conditions, by always following established safety procedures, participating in all required safety training, and remaining aware of safety concerns.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine documentation. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.


Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, area, circumference, and percentages. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.


Physical Requirements: Frequent walking, bending, reaching, standing while performing tasks; must be able to lift up to 49 lbs. on a frequent basis. Work conditions include exposure to outdoor weather and is based in a non-climate-controlled environment. It can be noisy requiring PPE as well as; exposure to airborne particles, fumes/dust, and aromatics from plant material.


Reasoning Skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Interpersonal Skills: Ability to quickly organize and communicate thoughts, and to understand communications from others. Ability to maintain composure, listen, and respond appropriately.
