Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy in the School of Pharmacy at West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently accepting applications for a Pharmacy Technician.

About the Opportunity

As a Pharmacy Technician, you will be responsible for answering requests for information, prior authorization, or help from pharmacy providers enrolled in the WV Bureau for Medical Services Medicaid Prescription Drug Program and WV Public Employees Insurance Agency via phone or fax. You will review different drug products to determine insurance coverage of the drug or prior authorization criteria. You will explain to the provider why a prescription drug claim is not being paid by the plan and will perform data entry for all drug requests and provide resources to the providers to help them understand the drug coverage limitations.

What you'll do:

Call Center Duties

  • Serve as the initial and main point of contact for healthcare providers serving the population of the West Virginia Bureau for Medical Services and the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency. Provides excellent customer service through interaction with pharmacies and other healthcare providers.
  • Evaluates non-complex Help Desk and prior authorization requests using established guidelines, then enters approved requests into mainframe computer. Requests which are complex or require therapeutic judgement are referred to the attending pharmacist.
  • Research provider inquiries using all available resources.
  • Perform callbacks to providers' inquiries when necessary.
  • Document all communications and required information in the appropriate database.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely over the phone, fax, or electronic mail in a professional manner.

Program Duties

  • Assist Program Director/Pharmacist with administrative details of the program. Gather, coordinate, and develop materials needed for enhanced quality of the program.
  • Respond to requests for information from state, federal, or other governmental agencies and departments, and colleges or other university offices.
  • Assist Program Director/Pharmacist with special projects as needed.
  • Compose correspondence, independently or in accordance with general instructions and/or guidelines, requiring a high degree of knowledge and familiarity of the program.
  • Perform research or statistical work in the compilation of reports involving the administrative activities of the program.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 0-6 months of experience as a pharmacy technician or similar responsibilities.
  • Strong mathematical skills necessary to perform financial and dosage calculations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercising judgement.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize information & draw logical conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and set priorities regarding the work to be accomplished.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communications skills. Outstanding people skills, including a positive attitude, outgoing personality, and the ability to effectively deal with all types & levels of people in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Skilled at using a microcomputer and related software, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Skilled at using mainframe/microcomputers for internet data collection, electronic mail & other software.
  • Ability to read and write in English and perform complex basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to learn scientific or specialized terminology specifically relating to Pharmacy and Medicaid programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of prescription drug information (i.e. generic and brand names, class of drugs).
  • Knowledge of pharmacy operations and insurance billing processes associated with retail pharmacy operations.
  • Knowledge of symptoms, drug properties and interactions, and preventive healthcare measures.
  • Strong understanding of pharmacy operations and insurance billing processes associated with retail pharmacy operations.
  • Ability to follow guidelines and convey information in an accurate manner.
  • Ability to be flexible and work in an environment with frequent rule changes.

Certifications:

  • Licensed Pharmacy Technician or eligible to pass an equivalent examination. Licensure will be required for continued employment.
