RESIDENT ASSISTANT

Reports to: Resident Service Director

FUNCTION: This position is part of the Eagle Mountain Assisted Living Operations Team a resident-focused, high performance, high-commitment work teams that support the philosophy of “Caring for the Whole Person.” The Resident Assistant is responsible for assisting the resident with the activities of daily living. The RA is also responsible for ensuring that the interaction with residents and family members will reflect our philosophy with an understanding of the domains that govern the interaction.

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Minimum Qualifications: Must demonstrate competency in the following areas:

  • Candidate must have a high school diploma or GED

  • Certification as a CNA or PCA

  • Experience in senior resident services, social work or health care

  • Prefer that the candidate have experience in working with older adults and acknowledge of the aging process.

  • Demonstrated support and understanding of the philosophy and the five domains of health (physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and social).

  • A flexible work schedule is also a necessity

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent organization and interpersonal skills

  • Medication assistance (within the scope of the state regulations)

  • Read, write, speak and understand the English language.

  • Freedom from illegal use of drugs

  • Freedom from use and effects of use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace

  • Persons who have been found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting, or mistreating individuals in a health care related setting are ineligible for employment in this position.

  • Demonstrates effective time management skills.

  • As required by state law, a valid driver’s license and proof of insurability required

  • Must enjoy working with the seniors and able to accept constructive criticism.

  • Ability to interact with residents who are highly susceptible to common illness without posing additional health risks.

  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks/responsibilities and complete duties/projects within the time allotted.

  • Ability to define and solve problems, including the ability to collect and interpret data from a variety of sources.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

  • Must be able to express yourself adequately in writing or orally with residents, family members, staff, visitors and volunteers.

  • Must be able to use standard office equipment which includes, but not limited to, personal computer, copier, fax, type writer and be able to operate an automobile and van.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work with the Resident Service Director and the rest of the operations team to build relationships and strong communication with residents and families to aid in their adjustment to EMAL, identify needs and problems of the residents.

  2. Provide assistance with Activities of Daily Living to meet the resident’s physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual needs with respect and dignity.

  3. Assist with bathing, dressing and undressing, mouth care, hair care, toileting, and ambulation.

  4. Assist with transfer and walking

  5. Change incontinent briefs and give perennial care.

  6. Change bed linens and make residents beds.

  7. Assist in recording temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates, and food and fluid intake and output, as directed.

  8. Aid in the delivery of specific core programs, such as fall prevention, exercise, hydration and others as identified, which will provide entertainment socialization, exercise, relaxation, and fulfillment of spiritual needs to all residents.

  9. Assist in orientating new residents to the community by introducing them to staff members and showing them around the community.

  10. Inform Administrator of any concerns related to the residence, residents or staff. Inform the Administrator of any concerns or changes related to the residents’ physical, cognitive or emotional well being.

  11. Share resident success stories and best practices to demonstrate the impact of our core services and there benefit to their quality of live.

  12. Take part in initial and on going training for the associates.

  13. Meet with residents daily to encourage communication and to gain an understanding of their needs.

  14. Provide transportation for residents as needed.

  15. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Housekeeping & Safety Compliance Duties:

  • Clean assigned areas following cleaning schedule

  • Learn and demonstrate proper cleaning techniques, using proper cleaning solutions and remembering the importance of no cross contamination.

  • Familiarize yourself with MSDS booklet and Universal Work Precautions.

  • Understand proper use of facility equipment and take care of this equipment.

  • Housekeeping duties may include, but are not limited to, laundering linens and some times personal clothing, cleaning bathrooms, kitchen, spot cleaning carpets, changing light bulbs, changing sheets and remaking the beds, vacuuming and dusting, taking out the trash, and sweeping and moping the bathrooms.

  • Report observations concerning structural and equipment wear, defects, and malfunctions to your supervisor.

  • Vacuum, dust and clean common areas and hallways

  • Carry out special duties or projects as assigned.

Food Service Duties:

  • Assist with set up, clean up and resetting of the dining room, which includes vacuuming the floors and changing the table cloths

  • Serve residents their meals and assist with set-up, cutting their meat, and feeding if necessary.

  • Pass hydration and snacks as scheduled.

  • May perform or assist with kitchen duties as necessary and requested by your supervisor or other Leadership Team Member.

  • Restock beverage and food bar, and clean and refill condiments on dining tables.

  • Fold napkins and press tablecloths

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Demonstrate active listening techniques, gain support through effective relationships, treat others with dignity and respect and seeks feedback. Must demonstrate patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.

Attend all in-service training set by the Community.

Must be able to speak clearly and distinctly. Must be able to be understood to the extent practicable by a wide variety of individuals some who may have various levels of cognitive impairments.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is classified as HEAVY, requiring exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift/move objects.

  • Constant standing and walking, frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, turning and stretching.

  • Visual and hearing acuity is essential.

  • Ability to remain calm under stress or in stressful situations.

  • Able to carry out essential functions of this job (with or without reasonable accommodations) without posting specific, current risk of substantial harm to health and safety of self and others.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations required.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES/STAFF MANAGEMENT

  • Assist in answering and forwarding incoming calls.

  • Provide information about the Eagle Mountain Assisted Living community when the Administrator is not available.

  • Greet and assist visitors.

  • Inventory, maintain and replenish resident service supplies as necessary. Maintain proper Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) documentation and update MSDS book as needed.

  • Plan and carry out special duties or projects as assigned.
