Job Title:Facilities Electric & Electronic TechnicianDepartment:University Hospital | Facilities Systems

Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, modifies, programs and repairs automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Systems and equipment include but are not limited to: branch circuitry, power distribution, emergency power, fire alarm, security, public address, pneumatic transport, televisions, automated lighting, conveyors, and material handling systems. Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects. May assist lower level technicians.

Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operates department vehicles; and performs other duties as assigned. Actively supports our commitment to the university value of acting with integrity and personal accountability to establish a culture of professionalism in the workplace.

Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24 hour emergency call.

Job Duties: Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties and other job-related duties as required. Performs Two of Five Technical Specialties (70%):

Branch Circuitry: Installs and reroutes electrical raceway (e.g. conduit, liquid-tite mold).Responds to and analyzes local electrical outages. Installs, repairs and replaces branch circuits and associated components: circuits, lighting, ballasts, receptacles, switches and outlets. Upgrades lighting systems and components. Updates electrical panel legends. Reviews building drawings as necessary. Troubleshoots and repairs electrical circuits and relays. Performs electrical system PMs.

Electronic Systems: Installs, repairs and replaces nurse call system components (e.g., bedside controls, emergency pull stations, staff control stations, processing cards). Installs, repairs and replaces electronic systems and related components (e.g., automated lighting, televisions, master clock, public address, safety and security). Installs, repairs and replaces pneumatic system electronic components. Installs, repairs and replaces motors and gears. Installs, adjusts, repairs and replaces automated systems and related components. Performs electronic system PMs.

Electrical Distribution Systems: Installs, repairs/replaces de-energized electrical distribution system components- motor controls, transformers, switchgears, emergency generators, panels, circuits, etc. Installs, repairs/replaces variable frequency drives (VFD) circulating fans. Performs work on de-energized systems. Performs troubleshooting / root cause analysis of electrical distribution system.

Pneumatic Transport Systems: Installs, repairs/replaces pneumatic tube system components including, but not limited to; slide gates, tube stations, dispatchers, input/output boards, motor drives, etc. Installs, repairs/replaces waste flow system components including, but not limited to; user display, door magnet, air control valves, radiation detectors, tube assemblies, filters, monitors, etc.

Fire Alarm Systems: Responds to fire alarm system alerts. Disables, enables, and replaces fire alarm system components (e.g., detectors, bells, strobes; Installs, repairs/replaces smoke evacuation systems. Updates fire alarm system server applications.

General Duties (30%):

Technical Support: Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes. Documents regulatory compliance tests. Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff. May assist lower level technicians. Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs. Troubleshoots and resolves field problems. Updates building drawings. Participates on emergency response teams.

Communication / Recordkeeping: Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders. Requests equipment and materials required to complete tasks. Provides feedback on materials. Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed. Informs customers when task are completed.

Other Departmental Duties: Participates in professional development/ continuing education activities: obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc. Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department. Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientation. May participate on committees. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Classification Requirements: High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; four years’ experience in electrical or electronic systems with a minimum of one year analyzing, troubleshooting and repairing electronic equipment and circuits, electrical and electronic logic circuits and/or computer hardware, software, and microprocessor controlled equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience; obtain the following within the probationary period: valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card; successful completion of probationary period includes demonstrated competence in two of the following technical specialties as determined by the needs of the department: branch circuitry, electronic systems, electrical distribution systems, pneumatic transport systems, and fire alarm systems.
