Kenyon College invites applications for the position of Diving Coach and Aquatics Director. This is a full time, 12-month reporting position with benefits. The Diving Coach and Aquatics Director is responsible for all phases of managing a successful diving program and managing and programming the Jim Steen Natatorium during the academic year and summer months. This position reports to the Head Swimming and Diving Coach and supports the mission of the College in its focus on student development, outcomes and success. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: recruiting, arranging travel, managing budgets, coaching, tracking equipment, developing alumni contacts, managing meets, teaching lifeguard certification classes, and hiring and supervising lifeguards.

It is also expected that the Diving Coach and Aquatics Director will embrace the department mission of fostering learning and developing community with a focus on the values of citizenship, competition, resiliency, sportsmanship, and teamwork within Kenyon’s unique campus culture. Successful candidates will be able to show a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their support for students from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, religious, and national backgrounds.

Essential Functions:
Diving Coach

  • Teach and instruct student-athletes in the rules and fundamentals of diving.
  • Develop and implement in-season training and workouts, practice and game-day coaching, including set-up and teardown of practice equipment.
  • Compile training results for all events and assist with statistics verification for official records and sports information.
  • Assist with home meet management for swimming and diving, including set-up and tear down of equipment.
  • Recruit academically and athletically strong applicants for admission in the selective, highly competitive application pool at Kenyon College utilizing Front Rush software, including preparing promotional materials.
  • Maintain excellent record keeping for all purchases and expenses for the program, to stay within the budget.
  • Inventory and safety check all equipment and facilities for diving.
  • Work in conjunction with Sports Performance professionals to maintain student-athlete welfare.
  • Stay up-to-date with sport and coaching best practices in order to provide opportunities for all involved in the program to become students of the game by sharing knowledge of the sport.
  • Participate in the NCAC governance for Swimming and Diving at coaches meetings.
  • All coaches are assigned additional duties in the areas of facility and event /game management and teaching. These responsibilities are determined annually by Coordinator of Lifetime Fitness, Game / Event Manager, Facility Manager(s) and Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation.

Aquatics Director

  • Hire, train, and supervise lifeguards for the Jim Steen Natatorium throughout the calendar year.
  • Teach lifeguard certification classes in accordance with Red Cross standards and curriculum.
  • Provide leadership in aquatic management and programming of Kenyon’s Steen Natatorium during the academic year and summer months.
  • Provide up-to-date and timely pool schedules to Kenyon community (Academic Year, October Break, Thanksgiving Break, Semester Break, Spring Break, Summer).
  • Coordinate with college’s maintenance staff regarding health and safety standards of the facility, including climate control, cleanliness, and all related maintenance.
  • Serve as Aquatics Director and assume other duties as assigned during the College’s Total Performance Swim Camp.

Other Expectations:

  • Serve as a member of the Athletics, Fitness and Recreation team, responsible for providing leadership, goals, and program implementation at a fully residential campus housing 1800 undergraduate students.
  • Develop and maintain mutually supportive and collaborative working relationships with student affairs colleagues, faculty, and other campus partners to accomplish shared objectives and tasks.
  • Lead and assist with designated departmental, divisional, and/or College committees, initiatives and processes.
  • Develop meaningful connections with students, staff and faculty by being available and visible on campus.
  • Assist with special projects and duties, as needed.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and compliance with the College’s and Department of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation policies and procedures as well as the North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA constitutions, bylaws, legislation and regulations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Department of Athletics’ student-athlete handbook, and the Student Affairs and College’s mission statements.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Hire, train, and supervise lifeguards.

Working Conditions:

  • Some heavy lifting / moving equipment is required.
  • The working schedule is not traditional nor regular: early morning, day, late evenings, weekends are required, as may be work during college breaks and summers.
  • Travel for athletic contests, recruiting, coaches meetings and convention/caucus attendance is required.
  • The ability to obtain College driver certification is desirable.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience instructing on the rules and fundamentals of diving.
  • Collegiate diving coaching experience is preferred.
  • Experience in recruitment of academically focused-student athletes is preferred.
  • Lifesaving or Lifeguarding Certifications, CPR/AED, and First Aid Certifications from a nationally recognized program required.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Certification required (or obtained within 6 months of employment).
  • Skill in rescue work, resuscitation, and first aid.
  • Two years’ experience working in aquatic program and facility management (or comparable experience).
  • Considerable swimming ability.
