TITLE:  Defensive Coordinator                                                                                                      DEPARTMENT:  Athletics                                                 REPORTS TO:  Head Football CoachEFFECTIVE DATE:  TBAEMPLOYMENT STATUS:  Full-time       EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION:  Exempt                                         PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB:  The defensive coordinator is responsible for coordinating the defensive unit of the team, including practice and game planning and management. In addition, they are responsible for coordination of assistant coaches in each defensive position. Reporting to the Head Football Coach, additional responsibilities include assisting the head coach in all facets of the program to develop a quality NCAA Division II Football program that will be competitive within the SIAC Conference on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The Defensive Coordinator will also monitor the academic progress of student athletes and work on and off campus on the recruitment of quality student athletes. They will also assist with strength and conditioning, provide general counseling to athletes and assist the head coach in fund raising and other related special projects.  SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: Include the following but not limited to:Plan, organize, and conduct all practices for the defensive unit, including daily on-field coaching and management at all practice sessions and games. Organize game preparation, including film breakdown; develop game plans and scouting reports related to the defensive unit for each contest. Develop an annual defensive playbook and teaching progression. Supervise and evaluate all defensive assistant coaches. Schedule and manage film sessions and meetings for all defensive positions. Recruit qualified student-athletes for successful participation. Demonstrate leadership, sportsmanship, and conduct becoming of the coaching profession adhering to all college and professional sports association guidelinesWorking knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations to pass NCAA Rules TestAdhere to all applicable compliance regulations including but not limited to NCAA, ECAC, The Centennial Conference, sport rules and regulations FERPA, Red Flags RuleMonitor and support the academic progress of assigned team membersAccomplish other duties as assigned, including one department-wide administrative duty.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Must be assertive, friendly, cooperative, flexible, tactful, dependable and logical and work in a collaborative manner with multiple offices.Must be able to deal with discretion in confidential and sensitive issues, problem solve and work independently.Must be able to utilize the following programs: Colleague, Excel, Word, Outlook, Hudl, Front Rush etc.Must have competent writing skills including excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuationMust possess strong customer service skills including the ability to accurately assess and handle phone calls and visitor requests with discretion and a positive attitudeAbility to prioritize duties and be organized, and detail oriented.Ability to work well with a wide range of situations (including difficult people), while maintaining the decorum of a representative of the college.Must be able to anticipate and plan for cyclical activitiesAbility to work in noise, heat, cold, odors, dirt, outdoor temperatures, snow, and difficult situations.Ability to repetitively grasp and manipulate objects of varying size and weight requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.Ability to exert oneself physically over sustained periods to complete job activities.Ability to stand a minimum of 6 hours during the workday.Ability to work some weekends, occasional holidays, and inclement weather.Ability to repetitively push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance while kneeling; squatting; reaching above the head; reaching at the waist; reaching below the knees; and bending at the knees.Ability to repetitively push and pull equipment (for example, football sleds, dummies, and pads) a minimum of 10 yards without assistanceAbility to climb a ladder or scaffolding to enter/exit a press box, get to a filming location or similar situation OTHER DUTIES: Perform other duties as assigned.  QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree (emphasis in Sports Management, Athletic Coaching, Exercise Science, Strength and Conditioning or other related degree preferred);5 years college and/or professional football coaching experience with strong college recruiting experience.  Certified Strength and Conditioning backgroundKnowledge of NCAA rules and regulations preferred.  Must have a familiarity with computer systems, good oral and written communication skills, strong organizational, management, and supervisory skills. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:    Ability to effectively work with various publics and diverse populations.  Human Relation skills of ordinary courtesy, understanding and ability to stimulate motivation, confidence and enthusiasm in students.Willingness to enforce university policies.Ability to coordinate with campus personnel to resolve problems/conflicts.Knowledge in the area of football specifically with expertise in defense. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to work in noise, heat, cold, odors, dirt, outdoor temperatures, snow, and difficult situations.Ability to repetitively grasp and manipulate objects of varying size and weight requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.Ability to exert oneself physically over sustained periods of time to complete job activities.Ability to stand a minimum of 6 hours during the workday.Ability to work some weekends, occasional holidays, and inclement weather.Ability to repetitively lift, carry, and position objects weighting up to 50 pounds without assistance.Ability to repetitively push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance while kneeling;
