** Our Summer Camp Counselors are paid $500 per week!  In addition, there is a $250 sign-on bonus awarded after on-boarding and training have been completed! **

I. JOB SUMMARY

The Fowler Center Cabin Counselor/Respite position is responsible for camper care, assisting in activities with campers, maintaining and keeping up the campers living quarters and grounds around the Fowler Center. Cabin Counselors are responsible for assisting the program instructors in engaging and motivating every camper in care.

Internships: It is possible to gain college credit or fieldwork hours from work experience at camp. Internships at The Fowler Center can also be set up in several different fields including therapeutic recreation, outdoor education, and parks and recreation management. 

II. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Welcoming parents, campers and moving campers into their cabins.
  • Assist with morning and evening preparation related to dressing, making beds, etc.
  • Provide assistance to campers with mealtimes. 
  • Provide assistance to campers with hygiene (i.e. showering, teeth brushing, care of soiled clothes/linens, etc.)
  • Assist with topical medications.
  • Serve as a key member of the group treatment team with the responsibility for ensuring each camper has a successful and rewarding experience specific to their needs.
  • Participate in award celebration at the end of each session.
  • Keep required camper records; complete documentation related to care chart, incident reports, clothing inventory, activity logs, progress notes, etc.
  • Care for and ensure campers are closely supervised and monitored at all times.
  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and engagement of each camper in program related activities.
  • Maintain cabin environment related to sleeping areas, bathrooms, living areas, outside spaces.
  • Assist co-workers on special tasks.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the social sector with a passion for MCHS’s mission and vision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

III. BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1-3 years of experience working in human services with developmentally disabled individuals preferred.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record that is acceptable and meets requirements of the agency’s insurance carrier.
  • Must meet the State’s Moral Character standard.
  • Must meet the standards and regulations set forth by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the American Camp Association (ACA).

Knowledge Requirements

  • Able to expressively and receptively communicate in order to complete necessary documentation relating to the camper’s Plan of Service as required by partner agencies.
  • Public Safety and Security — Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.

Skills and Abilities Required: 

  • Able to lift at least 70 lbs.
  • Able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).

The work environment described here is representative of that which an employee will typically encounter during a normal shift.  Work may involve standing or walking for multiple hours during the work shift and may involve exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
