Position: CHIEF ENGINEER

Reports to: General Manager

Division: Admin & General

Department: Props Ops & Maintenance

Classification: Exempt

SUMMARY:

The Chief Engineer is responsible for managing all aspects of maintenance staff on a daily basis. Directs, coordinates and performs routine, preventive and emergency interior / exterior maintenance and repairs to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of hotel operations.

Directs the Engineering staff, accounting/budgeting, asset protection, inventory control and human resources.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide the highest quality of service to the guest at all times.
  • Report work completed daily to supervisor.
  • Respond in a courteous manner to guest questions, complaints and/or requests.
  • Maintain guest privacy by ensuring Key Control Policy is utilized and ensure no room numbers and/or guest names are given out without proper identification.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting, initiating repairs, identifying malfunctions in mechanical or electrical systems such as HVAC, plumbing, and other equipment throughout the hotels.
  • Ensures that we Maintain all brand and franchise standards and follow-up on inspection deficiencies.
  • Ensures that hotel has Current Certificates of Insurance.
  • Ensures that all new service contracts are approved by Corporate Office / Ownership before signing anything.
  • Ensures that all outside contractors supply “current” Certificates of Insurance liability with $2M in coverage.
  • Ensures that Engineering Department support all Risk Management initiatives and guidelines for fire and safety regarding Engineering including the proper storage of chemicals, paints and etc.,
  • Ensures that Quality Standards and Service are maintained for Property, Product, and People.
  • Communicates daily with other management, and department heads and employees.
  • Participates in the development of annual capital budgets for the hotel regarding property, equipment and building repairs and replacement requirements.
  • Coordinates conducting the departmental operational audits and assists in developing corrective action plans.
  • Maintain the physical appearance and operational efficiency of the hotel including physical. mechanical, electrical, plumbing etc.
  • Installation & maintenance of all equipment related to HVAC, DG Sets, Water treatment, Fire Safety, etc.
  • Ensure proper records are kept relating to all plant and equipment for the hotel including repair and service records.
  • Attend all Facility Management/Property meetings as required, passing on necessary information to the maintenance team in regular junior staff meetings.
  • Perform daily and weekly property document inspections.
  • Establish and maintain department equipment and supply inventory levels appropriate to property requirements.
  • Responsible for quality service, meeting/exceeding financial goals, short and long-term planning and day-to-day operations.
  • Other duties as assigned, of which the associate is capable of performing.

MAINTENANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Familiar and complies with the hotels mission and standards in performing maintenance activities.
  • Maximise maintenance team potential with a balanced focus on operations, guests, employee and owners satisfaction.
  • Oversee the maintenance tasks, work orders and special projects ensuring timely and accurate completion.
  • Respond to guest's maintenance needs promptly and ensure guests receive professional, efficient prompt and courteous service to hotel standards.
  • Ensure the proper use and periodic maintenance of all equipment.
  • Respond to all maintenance work orders in a timely manner. Repair and maintain furniture and fixtures within the hotel.
  • May perform preventative maintenance and repairs in accordance with property standards.
  • May perform general maintenance on property grounds.
  • Ensures that hotel swimming pool have established procedures for pool maintenance, safety and health and sanitation procedures, including proper chemicals handling and application procedures, cleaning filters, completing maintenance request forms and record logs.
  • Ensures that hotel Landscape Maintenance programs for the building exterior and curb appeal for snow removal, lawn care, painting, and other gardening are meeting all standards.

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT OF STAFF:

  • Prioritise, plan, schedule, assign and supervise the engineering department staff.
  • Provide training to staff on supplies, inventory, maintenance and ordering procedures.
  • Train engineering department staff on correct maintenance procedures and assists in repairs as needed.
  • Ensure maintenance staff is wearing proper uniforms with name tag and upholds hotels grooming and hygiene standards.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with Employee Handbook and all policies and rules it contains.
  • Must adhere to all work rules, procedures, and policies established by the company, including, but not limited to, those contained in the Employee Handbook, Safety Manual, and operating guides.

SAFETY & SECURITY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take responsibility for the cleanliness and safety aspects of all plant and mechanical equipment rooms.
  • Ensure property, grounds, and work areas are maintained to standard and that all safety equipment and conditions are to code.
  • Develop, implement, and direct all emergency programs.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of all emergency procedures.
  • Practice safety standards at all times and be alert to hazardous conditions. Report or correct any hazardous conditions immediately.
  • Must be able to recognize potential safety hazards and security problems in the hotel and act upon each immediately.
  • Maintain, monitor and test hotel's emergency and security systems, features like Fire Alarm, CCTV, baggage scanners etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree – Electrical or Civil Engineering preferred.
  • Must have 3-5 years maintenance experience, with 2 years direct maintenance supervisory experience.
  • Computer Knowledge/Skills: MS Office.
  • Advanced knowledge of Building Management/Engineering.
  • Strong management skills, ability to appropriately assign or delegate work and authority to others in the accomplishment of goals.
  • Requires strong attention to detail, leadership skills, and the ability to effectively deal with department heads, guests, and staff members.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must be highly skilled in HVAC, boilers, electrical, carpentry, dry walling, painting, plumbing, roofing, and landscaping.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair routine mechanical and electrical malfunctions in hotel systems and equipment.
  • Must be willing and able to be responsive to complaints about maintenance and be willing and able to “pitch in” and help co-workers with their job duties and be a team player.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of all operating departments including rooms, front office, housekeeping, engineering, accounting, sales, food and beverage.
