Code Enforcement Officer

THE CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ENFORCEMENT OF CITY ORDINANCES AND CODES AND
PROVISION OF CITATIONS TO VIOLATORS. THE CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER MUST CONDUCT RESEARCH AND
INVESTIGATIVE WORK IN ASSESSING CITIZEN COMPLAINTS AND ISSUES TO DETERMINE THE PRESENCE AND EXTENT OF
VIOLATIONS AND WILL DOCUMENT ANY RESEARCH AND COMPLAINTS FOR PRESENTATION DURING COURT HEARINGS. A
CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER MUST BE ABLE TO DE-ESCALATE AND RESOLVE CONFLICTS WITH CITIZENS AND VIOLATORS
GIVEN THE NATURE OF THE CODE ENFORCEMENT FUNCTION, AS WELL AS MAINTAIN A LEVEL-HEADED ATTITUDE DURING
CONFRONTATIONS WITH VIOLATORS AND CITIZENS.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Enforces City ordinances and codes, including, but not limited to, landscape, solid waste, environmental
issues, junked and abandoned vehicles, dangerous structures, zoning, signs, fences, pods, pools and
stagnant water, property management issues, illegal dumping, lighting and glare violations, noise violations,
illegal home occupations, parking prohibitions, garage sales, no-permit violations, outdoor storage and
displays, drought management and other public health and safety issues in both commercial and residential
areas.
• Issues municipal court citations for violations regarding city ordinances, codes, etc.
• Testifies and presents evidence at court hearings.
• Performs research and investigative work in determining extent of violation and non-compliance, and in
preparing cases for judicial process, to include photography of evidence.
• Investigates and resolves citizen complaints received concerning suspected/potential violations.
• Initiates towing of inoperable, illegally parked, and/or abandoned vehicles on private property through
judicial orders for the abatement of public nuisances.
• Prepares Investigation and Abatement warrants for judicial signatures and executes those warrants.
• Prepares, maintains, and files reports and records regarding activities, i.e., door hangers, case files,
inspection reports, incident reports, notices of violation, and citations

• Responds to citizen inquiries both orally and in writing.
• Investigate and monitor construction activities for the purpose of checking permits, issuing citations or stop
work orders until structures, premises, or property are brought to code. Performs follow up to ensure
compliance.
• Files, makes copies, and prepares mailing of notifications and citations.
• Create, manage, and follow-up with code enforcement requests using City issue management software.
• Participating in community activities and public presentations.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License, Class “C”, with an acceptable driving record.
• Experience in code enforcement/compliance preferred

• Frequent standing, exertion, lifting, walking, and running.
• Maintain emotional control under stress, occasional prolonged or irregular hours.
• All essential positions are subject to recall during emergencies.
