General Objective: The Summer Day Program Coordinator is a temporary full time position that provides for the general care of at-risk youth during the summer months of June-August. This person works to develop and implement a comprehensive Summer Day Program for shelter residents involving recreation, culture, fun, learning and civic engagement.

DUTIES

Areas of Responsibility:

A. Summer Day Program Coordinator, duties to include:

a. Implement recreational programs and activities:
? Work with Program Manager and House Support Manager to develop summer day program, which includes setting up daily activities such as recreational trips, cultural opportunities, community service projects and educational activities.
? Supervise day program.
? Provide encouragement to residents to become involved in recreational, educational and community service activities outside of the shelter.
? Monitor individual physical needs.
? Lead recreational, educational and community service activities.

b. Work with youngsters in care, including:
? Teaching recreation skills.
? Helping with and teaching life skills.
? Teaching communication skills.
? Assisting with relationship building skills.
? Providing guidance.
? Providing for transportation of residents.
? Managing positive interaction and conflict resolution.
? Participating in staff meetings when necessary.

c. Meeting individual client needs:
? Providing individualized care.
? Providing appropriate and individual attention to youth in care.
? Doing informal counseling.
? Advocating for needs of youth.

d. Monitor individual behavior of youngsters in care, for example:
? Provide praise and reward for positive behavior.
? Do intervention or confrontation of negative or destructive behaviors.
? Give consequences.
? Teach and model appropriate behaviors.
? Record behavioral data.

B. Maintain program structure and assist with program accountability. Example of tasks:
a. Provide input to individual treatment plans.
b. Make entries in administrative and behavioral logs.
c. Write up all incidents.
d. Stay abreast of all information in logs.
e. Write reports as necessary, required or requested.
f. Attend and participate in staff meetings when necessary.
g. Attend and assist with corporate functions and meetings, as requested.

Responsibilities:
? Provide a safe, fun and educational living environment through scheduled and structured day time activities.
? Operate summer day program as designed and directed.
? Accept supervision.
? Work within a team approach to treatment.
? Be available to have relationships with children in care.
? Communicate clearly, precisely and directly.
? Respond to needs of children in care.
? Provide consistency and structure.
? Be a positive role model.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:
? Sound moral character.
? Experience working with troubled youth in a paid or volunteer setting.
? Knowledge of adolescent development.
? Talents for supervising and working with young people.
