Within the CSG, the Human Exploration and Space Flight (HESF) Division supports our NASA customer in all aspects of human space flight. The primary function of this position is to support NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Human System Risk Management (HSRM). The HSRM team is seeking an exceptional Post-Doctoral applicant as a Staff Scientist in the area of Spaceflight Human System Risk Characterization, Prioritization, and Management.

The incumbent will be an active member of the risk management team assisting in the characterization, mitigation, and communication of human system risks derived from spaceflight hazards. The individual will assist in the planning and delivery of risk communication methods and assure the overall risk mitigation objectives of the Human System Risk Board (HSRB) are met. The HSRB operates in the Human Health and Performance Directorate (HHPD) to optimize human health throughout all phases of spaceflight, providing support in development of systems, processes, and tools for achieving the goals of NASA.

This is a full-time hybrid position based in Houston, TX at Johnson Space Center that allows for some remote work.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Working with subject matter experts to facilitate regular updates to risk posture for the Human System Risks
  • Providing guidance to Risk Custodian teams on strength of evidence reporting and prioritization of risk work
  • Developing knowledge as a subject matter expert on risk assessment and risk communication
  • Working with data provided by and maintained by the Longitudinal Study of Astronaut Health (LSAH) to provide quantitative risk postures via probabilistic risk analysis and other methods.
  • Learning to coordinate with Health and Medical Technical Authority Delegates to programs on risk related matters for human health and performance
  • Gaining experience with the Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer (OCHMO) standards group to enable risk-informed updates to NASA Standard 3001 and other policy and standards documentation
  • Facilitating coordination with Human Health and Performance Division Leadership to ensure coverage of Risk Custodian activities, assignment of Risk Custodians, and maintenance of scheduled risk activities for the Human System Risk Board
  • Creating and presenting regular progress reports to the Human System Risk Board

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:

  • MD with experience in clinical practice who also has experience in a secondary field relevant to engineering or life sciences, or PhD in field relevant to engineering, life sciences, or risk with research or experience in aerospace or austere medicine-related activities
  • MD/PhD will also be considered
  • Requires at least 5 years of post doctoral experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, research, and publishing experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to facilitate discussion of complex scientific topics in a large group setting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including effectively explaining concepts to managers and scientists
  • Ability to lead and motivate others in multi-professional setting
  • Ability to define task requirements for project formulation activities
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple concurrent tasks and provide direction on competing priorities
  • Ability to be at JSC for at minimum 1 week a month in person
