Job Summary and Qualifications

DEPARTMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Call responsibilities are 24/7 coverage of all surgical cases. Schedule reflects work load for surgery.
  • Attends all scheduled department meetings.
  • Attends special continuing education workshops, in-service education offerings, and maintains nursing skills through annual review of OR procedures.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain safe, physical environment and required equipment and supplies
  • Give direct patient care as delegated
  • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to all age groups
  • Provide patient/family education that promotes healthy behaviors, supports recovery and enables the patients to be involved in decisions about their own care
  • Respect patient privacy and confidentiality of personal communication with or about patients
  • Notifies the circulator nurse of any changes in patients’ conditions noted, problems encountered and need for change in plan of care
  • Supply inventory maintenance
  • Be an effective member of the health care team by:
    • Restocking OR rooms as assigned
    • Assisting with all aspects of care of patient to provide quality care
    • Assisting with orientation of new employees
    • Pulling surgical case supplies
    • Participating in unit conferences and quality improvement projects
  • Continually develops skills to maintain competence and expand role to high level OR Tech and to function optimally
  • Able to identify potential or actual victims of abuse and understands proper reporting mechanism
  • Able to recognize adverse drug reactions and demonstrates understanding of proper reporting mechanism once reaction is identified
  • Use of patient care equipment and supplies safely and efficiently by practicing principles of good body mechanics and moving equipment and patients
  • Removing discontinued use equipment from surgery rooms and storing in proper places
  • Reporting broken/defective equipment/supplies promptly and removing from service
  • Instrument set maintenance
  • Handling equipment safely trying to eliminate damage or breakage
  • Notifying circulator of used supplies and equipment so appropriate charge records may be maintained
  • Informing circulator of use of implantable supplies to assure tracking of devices maintained
  • Assuring sterility of processed instruments
  • Understanding principles in sterile processing and storing sterile supplies to maintain integrity
  • Demonstrates compliance to policies related to proper posting of surgical cases and processing patients through the surgery department
  • Commitment to professional growth

  • Attends educational programs/in-services related to job performance and self-development programs
  • Maintain sterile technique according to established policies & procedures by: Maintaining sterile field until the patient leaves the operating room
  • Following aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies
  • Adhering to policies and procedure for scrubbing, donning gown and gloves, and setting up surgical field and Mayo stand
  • Assisting with the needle, sponge, and instrument count according to set policies
  • Shares responsibility for carrying out the physicians’ orders by reviewing and following preference cards
  • Communicates any patient’s report of pain to the nursing staff
  • Assists in following as needed:
    • Transport of patients between holding- surgery-PACU
    • Clean and disinfect endoscopes according to written procedure
    • Perform surgical site prep as directed by physician
  • Recognizes possible signs and symptoms of complications of blood transfusion reactions i.e.; itching, rash, back pain and reports to nurse immediately
  • Demonstrates accountability for assigned duties, i.e. case preparation, set-up, turn-over in a timely manner, cleaning, removal of appropriate equipment, stocking daily of assigned surgery room
  • Demonstrates accountability for assigned specialty areas of equipment and supplies to assure adequate stock for case needs
  • Assist in PI data collection
  • Assist in QC completion
  • Exhibits good interpersonal skills and maintains a collegial relationship with all team members
  • Strict adherence to the attendance policy

What qualifications you will need:
  • High School Graduate / GED
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support, or CPR for Healthcare Providers must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • No Travel Required
  • No experience Required
