Our tools measure blood oxygenation changes in the body 10x deeper than pulse oximetry and measure the electrophysiological activity of muscles and the brain. Job Summary: 

NIRSense is seeking an experienced applications developer to work alongside our growing scientific and clinical team in its Richmond, VA office. This person will fulfill a broad set of development objectives for NIRSense’s many customers. This person will help build programming interfaces between NIRSense systems and its apps, mature and test various communication protocols connecting physical hardware to app infrastructures, and bridge app outputs with backend data analysis platforms for algorithm development. The ideal candidate is an experienced professional looking to apply their skills toward optimizing system and app interoperability for NIRSense’s transformational capabilities. They work well in a fast-paced and high-performance team.

Salary: The compensation package will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s experience. The anticipated hiring range is between $90,000-120,000.

Hours: Full time

Travel: 0-5% 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • B.S. or higher in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or related field plus industry experience 
  • 3 years or more experience in mobile device application development
  • 3 years or more experience with embedded systems design linking physical hardware to app software systems
  • Experience writing and integrating native Android and iOS Bluetooth plug-ins for mobile apps
  • Experience interfacing apps with cloud architecture, including data analysis platforms and customer web portals


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with native and/or multi-platform app frameworks for developing apps for Android, Windows, and iOS
  • Cybersecurity and privacy awareness, with a focus on encryption requirements for the protection of PII and/or CUI
  • Experience building web development infrastructures for collaborator data upload and analysis
  • Background in health care, military, biomedical, wearable, or wellness products
  • Experience developing user interfaces for mobile applications
  • Experience integrating native applications with military app frameworks

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the integration of physical hardware with wireless app communication interfaces
  • Build and update libraries for communication between various system hardware designs with commercial, military app frameworks
  • Conceptualize and implement a web app platform for customer and collaborator data processing and visualization
  • Support development, internally and with external collaborators, of NIRSense’s Windows, Android, and iOS apps
  • Lead the effort of transitioning NIRSense software development into accordance with relevant IEC 62304 life cycle processes
  • Compose software development plans, V&V test strategies, and related documents to support the pursuit of FDA approval for various NIRSense products
  • Support the automation of product testing to streamline the software and overall product development process
  • Adapt software development processes with the growing NIRSense quality management system
  • Working with UI/UX designers to create usable, functional applications
  • With NIRSense research scientists, adapt UI visualizations to match physiological signal variation, alert criteria, and industry standard use of visual and audio alert indicators
  • Develop and/or mature an understanding of commercial and military app design standards and test methods
  • Provide technical writing support for instructions for use, UX guides, and other internal and external documents
  • Report to the Lead Scientist
