Ability Beyond Barriers, formerly Horry County Disabilities and Special Needs, is a non-profit organization providing services and support to individuals with intellectual and related disabilities, head and spinal cord injuries, and autism in Horry and surrounding counties. Examples of supports provided:

  • Carries out programmatic activities with participants such as class instructions, development of vocation, community living, socialization, functional academic skills, and use of leisure time, according to individual habilitation plans.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and achieving participant program goals and objectives.
  • Documents participants’ progress through daily and monthly progress notes.
  • Supplies requested assessment information.
  • Maintains daily training area attendance and turns in to appropriate person.
  • Maintains appropriate participant supervision and provides for the safety and well being of participants at all times.
  • Attending annual individual habilitation meetings, staff meetings, and training as needed.
  • Follows and adheres to all established operational schedules, i.e., participants, general, etc.
  • Reports to immediate supervisor for participant training instructions/problems.
  • Reports to program coordinator for non-training/educational, i.e., leave, grievances, etc.
  • Ascertains proper vehicle maintenance is performed. Maintains vehicle cleanliness, safety, daily vehicle log and first aide sheet.
    1. Maintains program training supplies/equipment/needs.
    2. Responsible for monies (cash/checks) coming in through receipt book.
    3. Fills out purchase request for supplies/needs and submits to immediate supervisor.
  • Maintains assigned equipment.
  • Restrains participants when necessary using techniques approved by HCDSN and SCDDSN.
  • Performs hygiene tasks for participants, i.e., changing diapers, assisting with toileting, showering, and bathing participants. Also feeds participants or assists with feeding.
  • Transports participants to and from program site and other designated locations as necessary. Operates center vehicles according to center and state guidelines.
  • Performs other assigned duties as requested by supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Required to stand throughout the course of the workday during program activities.
  • Required to operate all equipment associated with the training site that is being worked in.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and participants.
  • Ability to understand, follow and record instructions, both written and verbal.
  • Knowledge of developmental disabilities and handicaps.
  • Possess current driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Ability to assist participants in wheelchairs, i.e., transferring participants, pushing/pulling wheelchairs.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • A high school diploma or GED with one year experience working with the mentally retarded preferred and a valid driver’s license.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $13.72 per hour worked, 40 hours per week.
  • Paid Vacation, Paid Sick, and 13 Paid Holidays. Accrual of paid time off and paid holidays begins after the employee's 31st day of full-time employment. The accrual amount for Annual and Sick Leave increases with years of service. Within a full-time employee's first year, two weeks of annual leave and one week of sick leave accrues.
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance coverage is available through the South Carolina Public Employee Benefit Authority. Coverages offered for Employee Only, Employee and Spouse, Employee and Child(ren), and Full Family. A list of premiums is available through the Human Resources Department.

All full-time employees are required to participate in the State Retirement Systems Pension Program. The current percentage contribution is 9% per pay period. The South Carolina Public Employee Benefit Authority also offers 401k plans.
