ABOUT KIPP COLUMBUS               
Founded in 2008 with 50 students in 5th grade, KIPP Columbus currently educates 2,000 students in grades Kindergarten through 12. ABOUT THE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER ROLE

KIPP Columbus seeks a dynamic and strategic Chief Operating Officer (COO) to play a pivotal role in shaping the organization's future. As an experienced manager and leader, the COO will develop and implement a comprehensive strategy and business plan to propel KIPP Columbus toward continued success and expansion.

In this influential role, the COO will ensure the delivery of high-performing operational services and develop the infrastructure necessary to support KIPP Columbus’ current scale and future growth. A key aspect of the position involves overseeing the growth strategy for KIPP Columbus, focusing on defining and delivering essential services provided by the regional office to KIPP Columbus schools.

As the driver of operational excellence, the COO will set the standard for regional and school-based operational practices, managing a team to ensure that KIPP Columbus schools achieve and maintain excellence. As a vital thought partner to the Superintendent, the COO will actively contribute to the KIPP Columbus School Support Team, working collaboratively with the board, regional leaders, and school leaders to ensure the organization's success, sustainability, and continued growth.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Oversee the annual and strategic planning process and monitor progress toward multi-year goals and strategic priorities 

  • Lead the development, refinement, and execution of KIPP Columbus' strategic growth plans, ensuring the organization's trajectory from 2,200 to 3,600 students in the next 5-7 years.
  • Execute the current growth plan while proactively identifying and preparing for the next major opportunity to expand and serve more students.
  • Manage the creation and organization of multi-year, detailed operations and financial models for KIPP Columbus.
  • Play a key role in the 2025 multi-year planning process, contributing to establishing academic, talent, alumni success, and community engagement, including growth goals, strategies, and financial sustainability for the region.
  • Oversee the annual planning process for all support service functions, aligning priorities, initiatives, milestones, and owners with the 2025 KIPP Columbus plan.
  • Establish and implement effective structures to monitor and track progress on the annual plan.

Manage all facilities and campus operations

  • Oversee and implement the school operations strategy, including its planning and execution. Collaborate with key vendors/partners in various areas such as facilities, transportation, food services, safety and security, campus events, and student recruitment, enrollment, and attendance.
  • Define and promote operations excellence for KIPP Columbus, developing dashboards to efficiently manage regional office and school-based operations staff members to achieve desired results.
  • Recruit, manage, train, and develop regional and school operations staff to deliver excellent operations services and support consistently.
  • Ensure the overall quality of operations performance and customer service by analyzing service performance and customer satisfaction data, setting continuous improvement goals, and actively managing towards their achievement.

Develop and maintain compliance systems, grant processes, and risk management 

  • Establish compliance systems for charter cycles, ensuring KIPP Columbus' adherence to federal, state, and local legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the management of federal and state grants, securing, allocating, budgeting, tracking, and ensuring compliance with grant-related regulations.
  • Take charge of the region-wide management of legal affairs, insurance, and risk management strategies for KIPP Columbus.
  • Develop and maintain organizational policies and administrative guidelines to uphold compliance standards and organizational integrity.

Establish and maintain information technology and data systems 

  • Oversee strategies for planning, implementation, and support of information technology.
  • Build and maintain data infrastructure to support the region’s instructional goals and growth. 

Partner closely with the Superintendent to ensure schools are joyful, excellent, and equitable 

  • Oversee the end-to-end process of hiring, managing, training, and developing regional and school operations staff, fostering a culture of excellence in operations services and support.
  • Define and promote operations excellence for KIPP Columbus by creating systems to efficiently manage regional office and school-based operations staff members towards achieving desired results.
  • Provide leadership to the operations team, ensuring excellence in every school operations function, including but not limited to student information systems, procurement, food programs, compliance and reporting, student recruitment, and enrollment.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to both the KIPP national network and local charter network of operations and leadership staff, facilitating the exchange of learning and support among peers in different organizations.

Qualifications

  • A passion for and understanding of the mission of KIPP Columbus, including possessing a deep commitment to improving the lives of students from low-income communities; knowledge of and experience working with low-income communities required.
  • Approximately 10 years of team management experience in two or more of the following areas: Data, operations, facilities, IT, safety and security; preferably in a school system that has a focus on closing the student opportunity gap between racial, ethnic, and economic groups 
  • Strong operational and/or strategic experience, with a preference for 5+ years of progressively increasing management experience and strategic planning for a growing, multi-site organization 
  • An integrated systems builder with the ability to both build and scale best practices across multiple schools 
  • Experience leading, planning, and managing in an entrepreneurial, client-oriented setting 
  • Ability to negotiate and execute contracts and manage the quality of service providers and vendors 
  • Commitment to building relationships and trust with leaders, teachers, students, parents, and the community of Northeast Columbus 
  • Exceptional organizational skills, particularly in developing and implementing multi-year plans 
  • Ability to take and quickly implement feedback 
  • Adept at thinking strategically, translating plans into action, and exhibiting excellent judgment 
  • Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative
