The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the engineering department in the completion of process engineering projects following best-in-class practices. The Engineering Manager will directly execute on and oversee a team of engineers in the execution of, a variety of engineering functions including upgrades to plant design, root cause analysis, continuous improvement initiatives and management of capital projects. The Engineering Manager will have direct supervisory responsibility of the process engineers.

The Engineering Manager will support all policies, goals, and objectives of the company while representing the company knowledgeably and professionally.

Essential Job Functions

  • Leads others: expects, inspects, and coaches. Provides fast feedback. Holds people accountable.

  • Leverages systems to drive behaviors. Identifies the system (or lack of a system) that is creating unwanted behaviors and reengineers (or engineers) the system.
  • Utilizes Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Creates detailed capital project plans.
  • Manages capital project budgets. Communicates unanticipated deviations to CTO.
  • Simultaneously manages and coordinates the design, engineering, and execution of multiple projects that are safe, efficient, on-time and on-budget.
  • Develops and implements profitability improvement projects in alignment with goals and strategies.
  • Promotes a proactive (vs. reactive) culture.
  • Drives knowledge and problem-solving ability to lowest levels of the organization.
  • Diligently seeks root cause. Master of Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA).
  • Facilitates effective communication and positive working relationships between departments and with peers, superiors and subordinates.
  • Inspires others through a shared vision of the future.
  • Works closely with the operations department to effectively implement and integrate maintenance and profitability capital projects.
  • Supports operations team when challenges with existing systems are beyond the department’s capabilities.
  • Ensures vendors and contractors are qualified to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to retain best-in-class production.
  • Power-user of the Distributive Control System (DCS).
  • Drives effective change through the Management Of Change (MOC) process.
  • Ensures compliance with safety and environmental programs and regulations.
  • Regularly communicates departmental results to CTO.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures and issues disciplinary action to employees as needed, in coordination with the CTO and Human Resources.
  • Facilitates the performance management process to include conducting performance appraisals and regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings with employees. Documents in the performance management system accordingly.
  • Manages, approves, and monitors employee PTO requests and attendance.
  • Participates in the interview and selection process for new employees.
  • Supports and promotes a positive and cooperative team environment that fosters creative problem solving and shared learning.
  • Provides back-up for other department personnel as needed.
  • Completes tasks assigned by the CTO along with other duties not listed herein, but which need to be accomplished to maintain safe and productive day-to-day operations within the plant.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all employee records and company matters.
  • Ensures all local, state, and federal regulations are being met at all times.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher (from an accredited school) in the Engineering field.
    1. Bachelor of Science degree or higher (from an accredited school) in Chemical Engineering preferred.
  • 8 years of operations experience in a large-scale industrial, continuous process manufacturing environment.
    1. Ethanol manufacturing experience preferred.
    2. Experience with processing equipment such as evaporators, heat exchangers, centrifuges, drying equipment, boilers, cooling towers, chiller, air compressors, pumps, valves, electrical circuits, and instrumentation preferred.
  • 5 years of capital project management experience.
    1. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
  • 3 years of experience in a supervisory/leadership role.
  • Able to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
  • The right to work in the U.S. that is not based solely on possession of a student visa or a visa sponsored by a third-party employer.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to work around and on industrial equipment.
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs and ladders up to 200 feet.
  • Ability to work while standing on a continuous basis.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Must be willing to work around dust, chemicals, and other substances.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color on a computer monitor.
  • Ability to communicate by using and hearing a 2-way radio system.
  • Ability to respond to and support emergency issues on a 24/7 basis and work outside of normally scheduled hours as needed.
