Obstetrics Working Manager

Under general supervision, responsible for direction of patient care in the maternity and newborn care setting. Consults with staff, physicians and Chief Nurse Executive on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Assists in formulating budget. Adheres to the principals, philosophy and mission of Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center in all aspects of job performance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Implements Medication Error Reduction program.

Implements Medication Error Reduction Program for those staff demonstrating recurring medication errors.

Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.

Ability to perform and assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to AHA/AAP guidelines.

Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments on all patients as per policy. This includes: neonate, pediatric, geriatric and the general population.

Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate.

Is certified in fetal monitoring, and identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately based upon AACOG/ NCC standards

Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family and follows up appropriate.

Monitors supply and equipment usage to control waste.

Able to troubleshoot equipment problems and determine appropriate resource for correction of problem.

Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Assures that the Nursing Process is utilized consistently for each patient.

Follows patient/family complaints through to resolution. Effectively acts as OB Customer Service Representation for CVRMC.

Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formulation of the plan of care.

Acts as liaison between physician and patient care team

Effectively practices role of Physician-Patient Care Team Liaison to facilitate better collaboration.

Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, Chief Nurse Executive and administrative team.

Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and Standard of Care and hospital policy is followed to ensure quality patient care.

Demonstrates ability to assist physicians with procedures in labor and delivery, post partum and newborn nursery.

Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.

Maintains performance improvement activities for the department.

Documentation meets current standards and policies.

Provides education to staff on performance improvement. Ability to plan and organize orientation and in-service training for unit staff members, participates in guidance and educational programs.

Participates in patient care as necessary by working all shifts, as needed.

Actively participates in OB/PEDS Committee Meetings.

Exhibits knowledge/ understanding of Safety, Infection Control and Employee Health policies and procedures.

Adheres to the principals, philosophy and mission of Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center in all aspects of job performance.

Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Actively participates in effective guest relations through courteous communications with all hospital contacts; presents a positive image of the institution in all contacts both inside and outside the hospital.

Has working knowledge of department's budget and cost of supplies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises the Staff RN and the OB Tech. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, BSN required, Masters preferred.
• Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse by the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
• Two - three (2-3) years progressive nursing experience in which principles of nursing practice, judgment, and supervisory abilities have been demonstrated.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and techniques of management.
• ACLS, Fetal Monitoring, NRP and STABLE certification required.
• Must be able to interact effectively with co-workers, patients/family, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
• Must be able to perform effectively under physical and mental stress.
• Verbal and written communication is necessary to present information essential to managerial responsibilities, and nursing practice.
