Upon completion of initial training, this role will work a hybrid schedule in our Columbus, Ohio office. The position will report to the Supervisor, Personal Lines.

JOB OBJECTIVE:

The primary objective for the Associate Underwriter is to evaluate and select personal lines risks, ensuring they meet the company's underwriting guidelines and philosophies. Become proficient in all job functions associated with policy issuance, policy change(s), and re-underwriting. Develop successful relationships and provide technical assistance to our agency partners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Evaluate new business, renewals and endorsements to determine eligibility adhering to underwriting guidelines and established authority level.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of our underwriting guidelines, all processing functions/procedures and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain successful relationships with agency personnel.
  • Identify ineligible and questionable risks and elevate for underwriter evaluation.
  • Review; resolve any problems, and process revisions/ new business quickly and accurately according to established guidelines.
  • Initiate correspondence, verbal or written, when applicable, in order to verify all necessary processing/underwriting information has been provided or advise of any pending actions.
  • Order, review, interpret and evaluate underwriting reports. Determine if further underwriting action is required. If necessary, forward to the appropriate underwriter.
  • Input data on existing personal lines policies and input data needed to issue personal lines new business policy.
  • Calculate and process manual entries requiring special handling.
  • Assist others in training, completing and expediting work to meet our production objectives.
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high level of understanding of existing system abilities.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Actively participate in team meetings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Bachelor's degree and/or insurance designation is desirable.
  • Prefer four years of experience in the insurance industry and/or customer service experience in a related field.
  • Persons in this position should demonstrate a willingness to pursue insurance education such as AINS, API, etc.
  • This position requires familiarity with general office procedures, a thorough knowledge of personal lines insurance; knowledge of procedures, processes, forms, and administrative functions.
  • This individual must possess problem solving skills, a facility for understanding and applying new procedures; effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to adapt to changing work assignments.
