Capital University Law School seeks to hire a full time Professor and Director of Bar Services to begin in the summer of 2024. This is a full-time faculty position. The Director will be eligible for a long-term contract status and will have full voting rights at faculty meetings on all matters (including hiring), except matters pertaining to tenure and promotion of faculty on the tenure-track. The Director will support the Law School's overall academic mission to provide access and opportunity to student populations that have been underrepresented in the legal profession.

The Professor and Director of Bar Services is a critically important position at Capital University Law School. The Director provides academic support to law students and alumni on the substance and skills necessary for success on the bar examination. Serving in this position requires a strong understanding of and an ability to teach the legal concepts tested on the bar examination, the skills necessary for effective legal analysis and writing, and the study tools most effective for success on the bar examination.

Primary roles and responsibilities:

Bar Services Programs: The Director develops, implements, and manages all components of Bar Services programs of the Law School including but not limited to: (a) teaching for-credit bar studies courses; (b) providing programming for students and alumni; (c) monitoring bar exam developments; and (d) providing bar-related resources and support to faculty in doctrinal and skills courses. Specifically, the Director:

  • Develops and implements creative, integrated programs and initiatives dealing with bar preparation, including learning outcomes and assessment, to ensure that all individual activities are integrated and consistent with the overall mission, strategic goals, objectives, and policies of the Law School.
  • Teaches or assists in the coordination of for-credit bar strategies courses. Plans, implements, and teaches other bar exam-related courses, workshops, and programming in response to the NextGen bar exam as necessary.
  • Assists students and graduates to develop skills necessary for success with the bar examination including providing tailored advising, coaching, instruction, and referrals to develop essential skills for bar success.
  • Provides post-graduate bar support and programming, which includes scheduling and teaching supplemental workshops, reviewing writing assignments, and meeting one-on-one with graduates.
  • Provides advice to students on course selection for bar examination preparation purposes.
  • Compiles, tracks, and analyzes student and graduate data to promote completion of bar preparation coursework.
  • Compiles, tracks, and analyzes bar examination results (including statistical analysis), provides regular reports concerning results, and incorporates information into program adjustments designed to increase bar success rates.
  • Reports information regarding bar passage as required by the ABA and other accrediting bodies.
  • Provides general advising and support to individual students on character and fitness concerns and other strategic bar application and licensing considerations.
  • Provides a bank of bar preparation and examination information for students and graduates, as well as faculty who seek to incorporate bar examination material into doctrinal courses and research.
  • Monitors bar examination developments in Ohio and nationally and evaluates new developments in the delivery of bar support by law schools.
  • Maintains strong working relationships with the State of Ohio Board of Bar Examiners, relevant national organizations, and commercial bar preparation vendors.

Cooperative Work with Other Personnel and Departments: Collaborates with deans, the Professor and Director of Academic Success, faculty, admissions office, and registrar to provide services to students designed to enhance learning. Also serves on committees.


Technology: Integrates, where appropriate, technology into the program offerings. Develops and maintains a Bar Services web page with information and resources available to all students.


Evaluation/Assessment/Statistical Data: Annually evaluates each component of the program including those participating and/or teaching in the program. Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of course content, methodology, and instructional materials. Makes recommendations regarding course enhancements. Compiles information and statistics related to student performance.


Budget: Prepares and oversees the budget of the Bar Services department.


Professional and Program Development: Becomes familiar with the rules and regulations (special focus on the academic rules and regulations) of the Law School. Enhances professional and program growth and development by participating in continuing education courses, professional organizations, seminars and workshops, as well as reading current literature and maintaining professional contacts in the community.


Required Skills and Abilities

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.).
  • Bar membership in any U.S. jurisdiction (can be inactive).
  • A personal record of strong academic achievement.
  • Strong skills in the areas of organization, planning, interpersonal relations, oral and written communications, and providing student services.
  • Previous teaching experience, particularly in a law school setting, is preferred.
