The A&R Clinician is responsible for assisting in the process of receiving, scheduling and triaging in-bound calls and referrals throughout the admissions department for patients in need of the services provided.  In addition, the A&R Clinician will support members of leadership through the implementation of systematic processes for all departmental goals and objectives. Essential Role and Responsibilities:

  • Receive referral calls, obtain minimal demographic information, and refer the call to the appropriate source or schedule an assessment.
  • Process all requests for information and external referrals.
  • Completes pre-certifications as needed.
  • Assist in arranging for admission of patients, including alerting the business office staff to begin the verification of benefits, initiating calls to physicians and other related tasks as directed by the Case Manager.
  • Determine what Releases of Information are needed, and process them accordingly, per policy.
  • Assist in obtaining needed records and information.
  • Arrange disposition and community resources. Communicate with the designated Treatment Coordinator as indicated.
  • Maintain all statistics; provide support to the Outcome Study, and other data, as assigned.
  • Maintains good communication with the Utilization Review, Business Office, and other staff as indicated.
  • Maintains log of received calls and disposition of the calls, and other informational tools as assigned.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers, practicing good standards of customer service.
  • Responsible for assessing, diagnosing and treatment a variety of patient populations.
  • Responsible for working with adults and senior populations.  Must be familiar with common diagnoses with these population groups and familiar with specific assessment interviewing skills for each population group.
  • 85% of work time is spent providing direct patient care including assessment, diagnosing and direct treatment intervention.  The remaining work time is spent completing non-direct duties, i.e. clinical supervision and clinical documentation. 

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND SPECIAL DEMANDS

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively with hospital staff, physicians and administration.
  • Must be able to work effectively and efficiently in an independent role.
  • Have the ability to sit and stand occasionally and walk frequently, reach above, at or below waist height, kneel, bend, stoop, turn, twist and throw from occasionally to frequently.
  • Have the ability to communicate clearly and see well enough to read charts, treatment plans and typewritten materials, hear well enough to detect noises on the unit and have the ability to discern odors frequently.
  • Be able to remain calm while working efficiently under stressful conditions. 
  • Must possess good communication skills, to include writing techniques for reports and appeals and verbal presentations for telephone interactions and training seminars. 
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position to include both sitting for long periods of time and walking the grounds and units of the facility. 
  • Be capable of the manual dexterity needed to use small business machines

Qualified candidates for Assessment and Referral Clinician should have the following:

  • Candidates must be an RN or MA level counselor or social worker
  • Experience in behavioral health assessment and/or treatment.
  • At least one-year previous experience in an acute behavioral health hospital preferred.
