The Heavy Equipment Operator safely operates and maintains heavy equipment used in the upkeep of Williams County roads

Examples of Duties

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position. The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list and may change with or without notice. Incumbents must be able to perform the essential function of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Operates a variety of trucks and heavy equipment including, but not limited to, scrapers, motor graders, snowplows, dozer, backhoe, and loader
  • Transports materials, vehicles, and equipment to and from job sites
  • Repairs and maintains surfaces through activities such as patching asphalt and sealing cracks in pavement
  • Performs routine inspection and maintenance on trucks and equipment; reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair
  • Performs manual labor activities, including snow and debris removal, snow fence maintenance, foliage maintenance, and others as assigned
  • Adheres to safety rules and regulations on all work sites, reports safety hazards and traffic problems
  • Acts in the interest of public safety and personal property protection during emergencies
  • Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code.

Typical Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND three (3) year of related work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License required
  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening

Special Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in an outdoor environment with exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather
  • Work is performed in and around mechanical, industrial, and electrical equipment
  • Emergency on-call work is required

Compensation: Starting pay for this position ranges from $37.00 to $40.00 per hour and may vary depending on experience and training. Williams County offers a generous benefit package, including paid sick and vacation 12 paid holidays per year, fully paid health, dental and vision insurance for single, single plus dependent, or family contracts, term life insurance, long term disability insurance, fully funded retirement benefits through the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System.
