UNION GENERAL HEALTH SYSTEM - UNION GENERAL FAMILY MEDICINE

NURSE PRACTITIONER or PHYSICIAN’S ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide primary or specialty care as per the collaborative agreement/protocol on file in the clinic and according to the policies and procedures of the Clinic
  • Practice within the scope of practice as delineated by the practitioner’s education and experience
  • Comply with all appropriate requirements for clinic quality assurance and certification
  • Maintain license and board certification
  • Update Collaborative agreement yearly or as required
  • Must have clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Shall assist the Medical Director is development of new policies and procedures as needed
  • In consultations with the Physician, shall make necessary referrals and/or consultations that cannot be provided at the clinic
  • Shall assist in maintaining accurate and complete patient records

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant program leading to a Master’s Degree and/or meets the Advanced Nursing Practice or Physician’s Assistant requirements set forth by the Georgia and/or NC State Board of Nursing or the Georgia Composite Medical Licensure Board. Must possess appropriate certification and degree from a United States Institution of Higher Education. Must be licensed to practice medicine in the States of Georgia and/or North Carolina prior to beginning employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

At least two years’ experience in a clinic setting preferred

Experience as a surgical first assist may be required depending on specialty

Current CPR certificate

For NPs current Georgia and/or North Carolina RN license and approval to practice as NP

Computer literacy and proficient with EHR required

Wound Care experience preferred

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE:

  • Frequent exposure to blood and body fluids

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Standing required for long periods of time
  • Sitting and standing for moderate periods of time
  • Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard
  • Eyesight correctable to read numbers, medical records, forms and computer terminal
  • Hearing within normal range for telephone conversations and patient contact
  • Bending, stooping, and reaching to 6 feet
  • The work is high stress due to patient needs and pace
  • Manual dexterity to operate clinical equipment and hold delicate instruments
  • Lifting to 100 lbs and pushing to 200 lbs

Standards of Practice:

  • The Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant adheres to the current Standards of Practice as set forth by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), included with the collaborative agreement.
  • Use the additional guidelines for the medical management of patients in this Policy and Procedure manual
  • Use the rules for prescriptive authority set by the Georgia Board of Nursing, The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) and the medical board for the State. The approved formulary is in the collaborative agreement.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Patient care encounters
  • Review daily schedule and work-in slots
  • Return patient phone calls in a timely manner
  • Review all necessary labs, X-rays, and reports. Make sure appropriate follow up is arranged and documented
  • Call back sick patients as needed to check and document status
  • Assist with Surgical and In Office Procedures as required by clinic/specialty type
  • Complete medical records in EMR

Weekly Responsibilities:

  • Review result letters for all patients or call

Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Discuss patient flow issues/personnel issues with front office, nurse, or medical director as needed

Yearly Responsibilities:

  • Review clinic policy and procedures and input needed update
  • Participate in developing policies/protocols as needed
  • Update collaborative practice agreements
  • Identify CME opportunities
  • Update job description
  • Complete required hospital clinic education (OSHA, HIPPA…)
  • Participates in fire drill
