Job Description

The Discovery Specialist is responsible for providing the Career Discovery Waiver Service to three high school students (ages 15-21), between May and September 2024. The Discovery Specialist will work closely with each student to identify specific employment related preferences, interests, needs, and strengths.

Summer Job Opening:

  • Program runs May to September 2024; set schedule during July, flexible schedules for May, June, August, and September
  • Part-time, Monday to Friday, 1st shift, 9am – 2pm
  • Base location is the West Central School, 1481 W Town St, Columbus, OH 43223
  • $18.00 / hour

Duties and responsibilities may be completed outside of conventional business hours, except during the summer program. The summer program portion begins on 7/8/2024 and ends on 8/2/2024. During this time, the Discovery Specialist will work Monday thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with three assigned students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete all required Career Discovery Process training.
  • Complete the Career Discovery Process for three assigned students including: records review, team meetings, home visits, neighborhood observations, social observations, and vocational observations.
  • Schedule and facilitate team meetings, home visits, neighborhood observations, and social observations with the student, their family, and applicable team members. To accommodate the student's personal schedule, meetings and observations may occur on nights and/or weekends.
  • Implement student's Individual Specific Plan as applicable for the Career Discovery Process, including providing supervision and personal care as needed.
  • Provide job skills, social skills, and community accessibility instruction.
  • Develop and/or update Discovery Profiles and complete related observation and assessment documentation.
  • Administer medication and complete delegated nursing tasks, if required by a student.
  • Implement job exploration sessions at local businesses.
  • Provide students with transportation to and from community job exploration sessions in an agency van.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED, Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 1-year experience engaging with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Ohio Driver's License with less than 6 points
  • Reliable transportation with auto insurance
  • Attend paid orientation
  • First Aid/CPR and Med-Passer Certification – Free training provided
  • Pass criminal background check and drug screen
  • Ability to lift/lower 50 to 100 lbs. to assist students with transfers, etc. as needed
