Make the Road States (MRstates) is the national home for the second-generation Make the Road family of organizations in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada, this in addition to New York, that serves to uplift the voices of working-class, immigrants, women, LGBTQIA people, and people of color across the Make the Roads umbrella. From an operational spectrum it serves as the Finance and Human Resources Compliance Officers for the umbrella at large.

Make the Road New Jersey (MRNJ) builds the power of immigrant and working class communities to achieve dignity and respect through community organizing, the provision of high quality legal and support services, transformative education and policy innovation. MRNJ is a project of Make the Road States. Founded in 2014, MRNJ operates centers and organizing hubs in Elizabeth, Passaic, Perth Amboy and Newark, NJ that reach thousands of immigrant and working class people of color each year. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above-- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. MRNJ has won more than 18 pro-immigrant and pro-worker policies, including the nation’s first guaranteed severance law, landmark anti-wage theft legislation, occupational and drivers’ license for undocumented immigrants and a $15 minimum wage. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services including ESOL, legal services in the areas of immigration and workplace rights, workplace safety training and college access.

Current Opening:

MRNJ seeks a Development Manager to lead the fundraising efforts at Make the Road New Jersey with private foundations, government grants and individual donors.

Key Responsibilities not limited to:

  • Prospect fundraising opportunities by providing research on new prospects from local, state, and/or national sources, and developing appropriate strategies for cultivation and solicitation;
  • Manage the drafting and submission of new grant proposals, concept papers and letters of interest to private foundations and government agencies, independently and in collaboration with Director and senior staff;
  • Manage the renewal process for existing grants, including maintaining an accurate grant renewal calendar and liaising with foundation staff
  • Manage the timely submission of grant reports to funders;
  • Organize compelling funder briefings, and coordinate the participation of program staff in other funder events, such as conferences and affinity group meetings;
  • Manage annual fundraising event and any additional fundraising efforts through individual donor development;
  • Coordinate the production of fundraising and/or promotional materials for Make the Road New Jersey;
  • Provide support to the senior program staff doing fundraising;
  • Develop and maintain accurate up-to-date grants database system for prospects and awarded grants.

Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the U.S
  • Required to be fully vaccinated with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior first day of employment.
  • Possess a commitment to collective action and community organizing.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus/not required/mandatory.
  • Have experience working in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic work environment

Job Competencies:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • At least four years of fundraising experience – grant writing experience and foundation sector knowledge preferred – or equivalent experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds in accordance with the organizational budget;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent writing, copy editing and proofreading ability;
  • Strong research skills;
  • Experience working collaboratively on teams and coordinating multifaceted projects;
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks under deadline pressure;
  • Meticulous organizational skills, ability to prioritize projects and follow through on detail with high-level accuracy
  • Excellent computer skills and working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications;
  • A demonstrated commitment to racial, social, and economic justice and an understanding of the challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate-income families;
  • High level of accountability and initiative; needs to be a self-starter and eager to do team work to support the organization as a whole

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. MRStates offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this position is from $64,000 to $86,000.
