The Manager, Animal Facility reports to Joslin’s COO and Executive Director, Office of Sponsored Research and to the BIDMC Associate Director., Animal Facility. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the Joslin’s Animal Care and Use Program and coordinating with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in compliance with state and federal regulations and according to guidelines set by a voluntary accrediting organization (AAALAC). Responsibilities: Act as liaison to BIDMC animal operations leaders to assure Joslin’s leased spaces operate per BIDMC policy, procedure and guidelines and bring to BIDMC any animal concerns or questions from Joslin laboratories. Plan, organize, conduct and evaluate the daily activities and operations of Joslin’s vivaria housing colonies of laboratory animals. This includes daily management of staff, maintaining appropriate levels of supplies, and working with vendors when equipment is in need of repair/preventative maintenance. (essential) Plan staff schedules/assignments. Determine daily work schedules to ensure maximum productivity. Provide weekend/evening coverage in the event of an emergency. (essential) Maintaining and enforce Joslin’s policies and procedures, including all record-keeping requirements in collaboration with Joslin Compliance Department and BIDMC Compliance and in accordance with state and federal regulations. (essential) Determines space allocation for Joslin animals within the Joslin leased space. Conducts animal census and supports needs of Joslin Office of Sponsored Research for billing.(essential) Participate in Joslin’s capital and operating budget, providing input on needs for equipment, staff and vendor services. Communicate with and collaborate with Joslin laboratories, including conducting outreach meetings with Principal Investigators to discuss research needs and help them navigate BIDMC training and compliance requirements. Conducts hands-on training in animal handling and technical procedures with animal care staff and research personnel per BIDMC policies and guidelines. (essential) Assists in preparing Joslin space for triennial AAALAC Accreditation site visit. Supports the development of the Program Description document for AAALAC Accreditation. (essential) Attends professional meetings and maintains membership in related professional organizations to keep current on changing regulations and policies in the areas of animal research. Monitors approved animal research work to ensure strict adherence to the approved animal protocols as well as federal, institutional and regulatory guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals. (essential) Attends meetings as a voting member of the Incident Response Team. (essential) Participates in weekly phone calls for updates to Topaz/Granite protocol and animal database. (essential) Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: 4-6 Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Associate's degree in Animal Science required. Bachelor's degree in Animal Science preferred. 5-8 years related work experience required and 3-5 years supervisory/management experience required. Experience in complex housing and environmental requirements for a variety of species. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
