Job Description

The Machinist Apprenticeship will prepare you to have the necessary skills to set up and operate conventional and special purpose machining centers to fabricate metallic and non-metallic parts. The apprenticeship will conclude at the completion of two years, successful completion of the program will result in an offer of full-time regular employment.

Nature and Scope:

The Machinist Apprentice will work with the ATC apprentice instructor and Business Unit Manager. This position will utilize hands on experience in the ATC machine shop along with 150 hours of academic instruction for the first year.

Essential Job Functions gained during apprenticeship:

  • Analyze drawings and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances
  • Set and control machine factors.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, and accessories.
  • Machine and grind parts to specification.
  • Verify conformance of parts to specification using precision measuring instruments.
  • Operate conventional machining centers.
  • Heat treat machined parts on occasion.

Physical Demands:

Work in standing position continuously
Walk, push, pull, reach overhead, bend to floor
Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally
Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently
Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

VISUAL ACUITY: Near acuity with or without accommodation

HEARING ABILITY: Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify or diagnose

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • High noise levels from operation machines
  • Physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts Breathing fumes, dust and mist
  • Skin exposure to oil and fluids

  • Other duties as assigned by apprentice instructor/manager.

Minimum Qualifications

A. Education

  • High School diploma

Preferred Qualifications

A. Education or Experience

  • Machine Tool Class experience
  • Vo-Tech Machinist experience

B. Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to write in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to speak effectively.

C. Technical Skills

  • Mathematical skills.
  • Ability to use and read precision measurement instruments

D. Other Skills

  • Ability to effectively plan and organize.
  • Ability to work under pressure and maximize efficiency.
