The Nursery Assistant is responsible for assisting with day-to-day plant propagation, watering, and various other necessary tasks related to plant care, production, and maintenance of The Arboretum’s nursery.

The compensation range for this non-exempt role is $16.00 - $18.00 per hour.

The Nursery Assistant is responsible for assisting with day-to-day plant propagation, watering, and various other necessary tasks related to plant care, production, and maintenance of The Arboretum’s nursery.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform daily watering of nursery, greenhouse, and Garden Shop plants.
- Maintain ornamental containers/arrangements in the Visitor Center Garden Shop.
- Assist in plant care within the nursery which may include up-potting, transplanting, pruning, staking, pest management, and movement of plants when necessary.
- Assist with nursery propagation including seed stratification, seed cleaning and sowing, cutting production, and grafting.
- Assist in leading nursery volunteers during weekly workdays and special events.
- Provide support for the seed collection process.
- Serve as weekend staffing for the nursery to provide coverage for all watering needs and visitor engagement.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, or general education degree (GED).
- Two (2) years of demonstrated experience related to horticulture, botany, etc., or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Adept with technology. Previous experience with IrisBG software is a plus.
- Ability to work holidays, evenings, and weekends as needed (weekend coverage will be required for this position.)
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to professionally interact with visitors, volunteers, and staff.
- Self-motivated, with a willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically strenuous work.
