SMUD's Operational Excellecence team is in immediate need of a student intern.The student will be supporting the Operational Excellence team in migrating a large set of initiative data from an existing Excel based database to Microsoft SQL Server Master Data Services. Additional duties will include report creation, editing, or data transformation to generate insights into the Operational Excellence data set primarily through Microsoft PowerBI. Student will likely interface with our Data Analytics and Finance teams during the engagement as well.

Purpose

Under staff direction, incumbents in this classification are full-time students who perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in non-engineering subjects and disciplines.

Nature and Scope

The work performed in this classification calls for regular application of analytical and independent research skills. This work is distinguished from students engaged in repetitive and easily learned tasks who are employed in the Office Assistant (clerical/technical) classification. Incumbents in the Engineering Student Assistant classification perform at a similar level but are restricted to students majoring in an Engineering curriculum and performing tasks that employ acquired mathematical and science knowledge.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs tasks of an analytical or research nature for suitable projects or ongoing assignments which call for specific acquired academic skills and knowledge.
  • May locate sources of information; collects and organizes data.
  • Makes computations and analyzes data for degree of confidence and for alternative courses of action.
  • May develop computer programs relating to assignments and may code material for established programs.
  • May develop written, graphic and/or oral reports.
  • May assist staff analysts and technical personnel by performing elements of their work under close supervision.
Required Education

Registration as a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at a resident academic institution in a declared curriculum that will provide the specific skills and knowledge that will contribute to available work assignments.

Desirable Qualifications

Coursework in: SQL Programming, Advanced Excel

Experience working with large data structures, databases, advanced Excel skills, and SQL programming language.
