The Bindery Helper performs a variety of basic hand and machine operations to gather, collate, fold, staple, or bind printed materials. He or she will utilize, set up, and maintain machines and perform other miscellaneous handwork that cannot be done by a machine. This includes but is not limited to such tasks as downpiling, feeding pockets, checking and strapping printed materials from the saddle stitcher & perfect binder, and inspecting materials for defects and imperfections.


Primary duties:

Read, understand, and follow work order instructions

Learn & understand the meaning of bindery terms such as drilling, perfect binding, saddle stitching, labeling, carton packing, poly bagging, packaging, feeding pockets, tape machine, collate, gather, inserting, and downpiling.

Recognize safe work habits, wear personal protective equipment (PPE), identify first aid kits and know how to activate emergency stop buttons.

Correctly put forms in a pocket, jog forms accurately, and keep up with the speed of the machine.

Utilize basic skid patterns for downpiling, keeping up with the speed of the machine, and pull full pallets out and start new pallets

Operate a tape machine and replace tape

Troubleshoot common operational errors

Make carton labels

Read and use bag tags, bag mail, skid bagged mail, how to label postal skids, and identify bad inkjetting

Understand manufactures' recommended procedures and/or company policies for preventative maintenance

Perform quality checks on machines and select, use and maintain the proper tools for cleaning and maintenance

Possess a high level of quality control; correctly and efficiently identifying missing stitches, dog ears, bad trimming, glue problems, missing forms, hickeys, bad seals in polywrap, wrinkles, tears, light or dark inking, etc


RESPONSIBILITES:

• Follow all safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to proper use of PPEs, safe ergonomic practices, and proper and safe handling of chemicals.

• Maintain working knowledge, awareness, and compliance with ISO Procedures.

• May require additional availability to work evenings and/or weekends.

• Other duties as assigned, including working where directed, be it on varying presses or in other departments.



Requirements:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Excellent vision, including the ability to perceive color

• Ability to operate jacks, fork truck/clamp truck safely

• Ability to work at a rapid pace

• Ability to remain physically and mentally alert during second shift hours (6pm – 6am) where applicable

• Ability to tolerate being exposed to loud noises and moving machinery (PPE provided)

• Manual dexterity

• Capable of repeated standing, walking, sitting, bending, and lifting of skids and skid boards up to 60lbs for 8-12 hours at a time

Excellent vision

Ability to operate jacks safely

Ability to work at a rapid pace

Ability to tolerate being exposed to loud noises and moving machinery (PPE provided)

Manual dexterity

Ability to perform the following:

Standing = 80 %

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma or Equivalent

• Fluent in English; written and oral

• Problem solving skills

• Communication skills

• Basic math skills
